Hell-bent on righting Nintendo's wrong, users dumped mod chips via complicated install procedures in order to obtain the absent feature. The various modding alternatives circulated on the web for months, but now a comparably simple method has surfaced that requires no additional hardware or tweaking.
It would seem that some enthusiastic programmers have been able to enable DVD playback by simply installing a homebrew channel on the Wii with an embedded libdi DVD access library file. From there, users can access a general media player titled MPlayer. The software can run on both modded and unmodded systems and can display media from SD cards and DVD discs.
While the development is certainly a far more time efficient way of getting DVD playback on a Wii, we still fail to realize the necessity. Even if altered to do so, the DVD playback on a Wii is more than likely inferior to watching a disc on other types of hardware. | awesome...but i see this not working with the new update occurs...but the fact that you dont have to modd the actual system makes it even a better thing.
true that the Wii only puts out 420p while standalones and the PS3/360 can put out up to 1080p, this should make the people happy who wanted the Wii to have playback.
Nintendo should make a official channel on something like this...i'd d/l the channel and use it.

Seriously? I never understood why DVD playback is so important to some people. Looking at my entertainment center right now, I've got a DVD player, the 360, and the PS3 which can all play DVD's. I don't need my Wii to do it too.
I guess it's cool that someone could finagle a way to do so, but meh. CobraIsland.com |

I wanted to install the homebrew channel anyway, and I needed a DVD player on my TV downstairs anyway. I have my PS3 on my upstairs TV, so I didn't have a DVD player on my downstairs TV. It was pretty easy to get installed and running.
Now I just need to figure out what homebrew apps I want to install. www.vapeAtron.com - A new e-smokers forum, join us today! www.TrionStudios.com - Check it out! |

Even if I didn't, players can be had for 20 bucks these days. DvD playback on the Wii seems silly. I've never understood wanting to use your $250 console for a job a $20 throwaway player can do. Hell, you can buy a nice upscaling player with Divx and hdmi for $60. I'll wear out my drive spinning games only thanks. |

News Credits: 7 | I'm planning on selling my DVD player, since the Xbox 360 can play DVDs. Though, I'm glad that somebody found a way to make the Wii have DVD playback. But IMO, it doesn't really help a lot for the little white system. |

Also, don't forget that this was completely done without a modchip. If you look at the boot menu for the custom app channel, it's completely loaded with Genesis, SNES, and NES emulators. |
