Rumor: Microsoft green-lights 360s from other companies

Interesting rumor. I remember a friend having a TV with a built in NES. I thought it was coolest damn thing ever (of course, I was only like 8 at the time). Could be cool, could be catastrophic.

I have this mental image of this being the result of some high-powered heckling. Like Microsoft is out at dinner with like, Phillips, Samsung, Panasonic, etc.

Microsoft: Its cool guys, I got this.
Samsung: Nah, let me get the check. Wouldn't want your card to red ring.
*snickering*
Microsoft: Fine, if you bastards think you can build the 360 better than me, lets see it!

If this is true, I can only imagine how it'll play it -- I'd think the 360's pretty close to reaching saturation.

...also, didn't Panasonic build a DVD-Capable Gamecube some years back that never made it out of Japan?

It has happned before. JVC produced a console called the X'EYE that was at its core a Genisis with CD in a single unit. Aparantly it did poorly, at least in part to Sega releasing the CDX a couple of months earlier for cheaper. I got one from a guy at work back in the day for $25. Still works today.

Yeah they did, but it was pretty tacky looking. Looked like a big gold or silver plated cube if I remember right.

Not a good idea if you ask me. I like being able to transport my 360.

It would be funny to have a Sony Xbox 360 with blu-ray.

Seriously though, I think any of these non-microsoft xbox 360's would have to be relatively expensive because of the non-subsidized 360 hardware. Basically, the hardware manufacturer would not be able to make any money off software sales so they would have to build in complete costs of the hardware plus whatever licensing fee MS would charge for allowing them to make a 360.
