Though, if anyone can explain Sony's overall logic to me, it would be greatly appreciated. |
They are getting their ass kicked?
-A year in and Nintendo has doubled their sales, and they aren't even close to competing w/ 360.
-Japan has seemingly turned their backs to the PS3
-Their "big" franchises have either come up bust (Lair) or been delayed to 2008 (GTA4, MGS4, KZ2).
-The market for high def DVD hasn't been the boon they hoped for (where DVD essentially carried PS2 for its 1st year, this time its been an anemic PS3 carrying BluRay).
-The last price cut had less of an effect than hoped for, thanks to them letting slip that the 60gig was being discontinued. Everyone who paid attention (which is most of those willing to spend $500 on a console) was willing to wait for the price cut that would come once the 60g model sold out. Ironically that dried up 60g sales and delayed the cut.
Since the only thing that helped sales at all was the price cut (and again I think that disappointed), they had little choice but to sit pat or cut again. Unfortunately with their losses on each console they could only hit $399 by drastically cutting features. |

I know each model is different aside from the amount of GBs, right? I am KING LAFFO on Youtube | Castle Geek-Skull Blog | I MAKE MUSIC | Feedback |

IIRC The original Japanese and North American 60 GB models have the highest level of backwards compatibility. |

The 40GB loses Backwards Compatability with PS2 games (PS1 still playable).
Before everyone says that it's software emulated now, that is mostly true. The 60GB PS3 dropped the Emotion Engne chip, but kept the graphics chip. The 40GB loses that chipset completely, thus killing PS2 BC. | In the US the 60gb and the 20gb still have the EE+GS(Combo chip in use since the later PS2 models), The 80gb and 40gb units are the ones that skip over it. If the European 60gb, and the 80gb can manage BC through sofware emulation I don't see how the new 40gb will be incapable of that. Neither the EE or the GS are manufactured seperately anymore so there is next to no way that the european 60gb version has a pure GS chip in it so the emulation it achieves must be pure software.
Dame, Dame, Dame, Dame Ningen!
