It's a pity that this problem exists when it could've been so easy to fix in the beginning. Kid Dynamite, Deefuzz, and TrickyDisco agree: I win at the internet.

Plus its a moot point anyway since almost every country in the developed world has a DTT system and will be shutting down analouge within the next 5 or 6 years. |

If I remember correctly, in 1996 the US congress originally slated the cut off date for 2005-06, now it got pushed back to 2009. It's been a slow and akward process and the general public still hasn't truely been informed. Plus once they do switch to digital, it still doesn't ignore the fact that 60 years of TV brodcasting will look like shit on your new fancy TV. Something that the average joe will be disgruntled about. They expect it to look good no matter what they are watching.
My dad, for example, regrets buying his HDTV. He (like a lot of people) have been misled by the hype. He set it up, turned on the TV and it was all pixelly. He said "I thought it was supposed to look better" I told him that he had to wait. He replied "Well I could have saved my money and bought it later then."
I've been on the fence about buying one. But I decided I am going to wait and see if this cut off date will ever happen, or if I have to pay an extra $10 a month just to watch sharks in HD.
I saw a Boxing commercial and it said "It's a fight to the finish" Thats a good place to end.

I knew Analog wouldn't look too great, but it looks nicer than I expected. Plus, after Botcon, I'll be getting an HD reciever from DirecTV. Almost all of my local networks now broadcast in HD (NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, etc.) and so does ESPN. So I'll be set for the sports seasons and all the shows I watch on a semi-regular basis. But I bought the thing mainly for DVD's and gaming, and so far it has not dissapponted. I got very inexpensive progressive scan DVD player with HD upconversion using an HDMI output and my movies have looked fantastic, much better than when I was using component cables. And the lack of HDMI support is what is puttign me off the Xbox 360 right now. I'm holding out hope they will release an HDMI compaitable 360 within the next year or so. I can't imagine Halo3 without HDMI.
If people are buying HD sets, I really suggest doing some homework. Find out if what you want is available and compaitable with HD sets. Also, make sure you know what you need to get the most out of your set. Make sure to know what cables you need (HDMI if at all possible) and that your DVD players and game systems are compaitable. Don't expect to be playing your Super NES on an HD system (though the Wii should take care of that problem). |

I'm getting the impression that you have your analouges, digitals, SDs and HDs a bit confused here. If your trying to say that HDTVs would benefit from more stuff that compensates for the lack of resolution in SD material, then i'd agree and point out that better HDTVs already have filters or presets that soften the picture to compensate.
If your actually saying that they should develop stuff that makes broadcast analouge look better, then my original reply still stands since its a dying system that already has a operating digital replacement in the parts of the world where this is actually an issue. The real solution to people watching analouge on TVs that show how much it sucks is for the manufactures to start including digital tuners as standard in all units. Quote: |

I can't imagine Halo3 without HDMI. | The reason why those dvds look better with HDMI than component on your up-converting player is because your player will only display the movie at 480i or p when using component its not a flaw in component technology its because the MPAA doesnt wan't people copying hd up-converts of the movie. X-box 360 through component, vga, or HDMI would more or less look the same.
