Sony has confirmed through a PlayStation 3 FAQ on their official PS3 website that their upcoming next-generation console will in fact be compatible with PS1 and PS2 game saves, to support and complement the PS3's already-announced (hopefully) full backwards-compatibility with past-generation PlayStation games.
This is, of course, good news... but there seems to be just one caveat. From what is stated on the website, it would seem that while your old PS1 and PS2 game saves will indeed be usable on the PS3, you're going to need to buy a "Memory Card Adaptor" to actually be able to convert them over to your PS3. From the website:
"To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk," the site reads. "This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PlayStation 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card."
The site, however, does not mention whether Sony themselves will be making such an adaptor available, or if this responsibility will fall solely to third-party peripheral manufacturers.
It's worth noting that, at least in the case of the Xbox 360, the latter has been the case so far; there's no officially supported way of moving old Xbox game saves over to an Xbox 360. Only time and the nearing of the PS3's November launch will shed light on Sony's plans for this aspect of the PS3's feature set.

but an adapter....come on... |

Also PS1 saves worked on a PS2. |

it shouldnt be an adapter. should be built in. |

Otherwise, I could say that the NES is Famicom compatible, the Genesis is Master System compatible, the SNES is GameBoy compatible, and the ColecoVision is Atari 2600 compatible. Taking third-party adaptors into account, I could also say that the N64 is NES, Famicom, and SNES/SFC compatible, the Game Gear is Master System compatible, and the PS1 is GameBoy compatible. Since you can't actually even use the card itself, but have to transfer the data to a different medium, I could go beyond that and include all the emulators available to play other games on N64, Dreamcast, PS1/2, Xbox, GBA, DS, GP32/X, and PSP. However, much like Sony's claim, that would border on being a lie. |

Also, will Dual Shock 1 and 2 controllers work on PS3? I assume you will need a addapter, but is there any word on an addapter for the controllers? |
