There has been leaks that they were working on a new system that took the Wii U controller to the next level by replacing it with a fully function DS that will be the included controller.

If true, I totally called it. Nintendo's home console market has been sluggish ever since the N64, but their handhelds have always printed money. The Wii sales were catching lightning in a bottle, and most likely not going to be replicated as easily. Japan has gone almost 100% mobile, and the West is heading towards that same place so it makes sense to focus on mobile for the next system. I suspect this thing is going to be like the Nvidia Shield, with some base station/HDMI stick that wirelessly transmits to your TV. The only thing that will be a little bummer to me is if this really is a portable Steambox-clone/streaming system, it means after 30 years of being a Nintendo fan, there will no longer be Nintendo games sold in stores. Oh, I'm sure something will be there, but it will just be like a small box with a code. No game cartridge or disk inside.
I'm wondering if we'll see this at E3 this year and released next fall, or if the typical 5-year cycle will be followed and this will be released fall 2017.
Highly, highly unlikely. We already know that for E3, Nintendo is showcasing their games for 2015. The fact that Zelda U has been delayed til 2016 also indicates that they plan on support the Wii U throughout 2016 as well. I say that the absolute earliest we could see the NX is late 2016 though a 2017 release seems more realistic.
Nintendo stated that there won't be any more news about it until 2016. So a release date could be 2017 - 2018.
Unless Zelda U is the next Twilight Princess and it will be on both consoles. Or they cancel the Wii U version to sell their next console.
I think this is probably the case. They are also most likely pushing the launch of Zelda U closer to the the reveal/launch of their next system. Since nearly every console for Nintendo gets 2 Zelda titles before it dies.
Neh. I see this happening; Zelda U releases no later than June 2016. Nintendo showcases it's new hardware at E3 2016, releases it in 2017.
What if the Console will be called Nintendo Enterprise? That would be really awesome. They should give their consoles cool and creative names again. It all started with the Nintendo 64.
