Vanilla version on the Aus Blizzard store is $69.95 - so yeah without a decent campaign I just can't justify the outlay since my time for online games is limited.

If it had come out 10 years ago I'd be neck deep in its Collector's Edition :p

Not so critical because you're allowed to switch characters during the match; you're not locked-in at any time. Thereby it becomes more a matter of reading the current flow of the game and swapping out to cover for weaknesses.

Devs have already said that they've got two new Heroes in the works to add to the roster post-launch, and there should be a steady stream of them thereafter. No word if as frequent as, say, Heroes of the Storm, which adds new characters at the rate of roughly one a month, but we should wind up with a pretty robust roster in short order. Lots of new costumes and customization stuff will be added steadily, too. They've already been rolling them out at a steady rate during the closed beta. More maps and more gameplay modes are sure to be added, as long as they can find inspiration for team fight mode variants that are worth putting effort into.

So yeah, price of entry may be a bit steep, but if we're comparing to similar games like Team Fortress 2 or League of Legends, the costs will leverage out in your favour in the long term. It's not a "free to play" game. You'll get the base game and all additional content all packaged in with that flat entry fee. Cosmetic items will unlock steadily as you play the game, no need to pay for them (unless you have money to burn and really want to accelerate your earning rate). Players of DOTA/League/TF2, on the other hand, often find themselves paying far more than that ~$60 across their gaming careers, as they incentivize the cash purchase of new equipment, cosmetics, and character unlocks.

Oh, I was (for some reason) under the impression that they were allowing that just to see if the servers could take a lot of complex, on the fly changes like that. If it's a regular gameplay thing then it will make team balancing a lot easier and dynamic but I maintain a party of friends will allow for greatest team synergy.

So the commercial I saw for this looked pretty cool, but is it just another online only game?

Yeah, it's basically Blizzard's answer to Team Fortress 2.

I'd be lying if I said that the Mercy wings for Diablo III and the free Tracer unlock for Heroes of the Storm didn't seriously play into my decision to get into this game in the first place.

I'm really not an FPS player at all (only one I've ever really gotten into was Borderlands, and that's more a co-op RPG than a true FPS), and I've never been a competitive-type of person to really get into these types of games in the first place.

But Blizzard sold me instantly on its charming cast of characters, and the incredibly varied gameplay mechanics make this look like wild fun in all the beta videos I've seen. Heroes of the Storm has slowly gotten me into the groove in terms of competitive multiplayer games (even if I still mostly hang out in vs. AI matches. I'm such a noob scrub at this stuff). So I'm really rearing to give this thing a shot. I'm totally going to suck at first, but I'm willing to learn.

Why is this thread buried on the third page when Open Beta just started?

Anybody else besides me have early access? Otherwise, it opens to the public in a couple of days.

And yeah, as I surmised earlier, I totally suck. The limit of my FPS play is Borderlands, which is an entirely different set of pacing from a more competitive-type game. This is gonna take some practice.

Been playing the beta, kind feel like the characters all need a boost to movement speed. They all feel as if they are walking briskly instead of sprinting/running.

It's kinda the point though. Movement isn't supposed to be absurdly fast-paced, because you need that level of contrast so that characters like Genji, Tracer, Soldier76, and Lucio can do their things. Also means that characters with slow-moving projectiles like Reinhardt and Lucio aren't royally screwed.

As an FPS newbie with no other real point of comparison, movement generally feels fine to me. Can't hold down sprint everywhere like I could in Borderlands, but I'm alright with that. On the flipside, it means that me and my mediocre target training skills have a fighting chance (I still get constantly screwed though because I'm bad at judging the origin of incoming fire...)

Not this weekend, but starting later today/tomorrow, depending on time zones, through to next Tuesday.

When I played it on PC a couple weeks ago I felt like it was almost made for a controller, but I played it earlier on console and I don't know what it was, but it just wasn't the same. Which is a shame because I recommended it to some of my friends who have consoles but not PCs, and now i'm not sure how they'll like it.

Been playing the open beta all day. Probably the most fun I had in a multiplayer FPS on PC since the OG Counterstrike

I don't like first person shooters and I'm very bad at them but this game is a hoot. Bastion and Winston are my favorite characters so far.

I didn't think i'd be into it but I loved it, only got an hour or so of the Beta but it was enough to get me to pre order the game.
