Hi again everybody! I've fallen in love with the Kreon line, and I've enjoyed customizing my figures with painted Shapeways parts, mostly by the uber-talented Tresob. If you're interested, you can find my custom painting thread here: Minor/Repaint: - Yet another custom Kreon thread!

However, Hasbro hasn't yet put out all of the characters I want, and I'm a little worried about the difficulties in availability in recent waves. Also, the upcoming Kre-o product seems to be leaning away from expanding the G1 cast, which is what I'm mostly interested in. I've been inspired by mightyspacepope's previous decal work, and I have an abiding desire to find excuses to need ever more of Tresob's amazing Shapeways stuff, so this has led me to start creating some decals of my own. Hence this thread, of course! I've been refining my technique for several weeks now and I'm finally comfortable posting what I've come up with.

Some notes on the decals themselves:
    • My intent was for these to be made into water-slide decals, which allows me to cover more of the body than just the flat areas like the chest. While the shoulders are fair game, I think the rounded arms are too curvy even for water slides.
    • Note that some of these designs assume I'll be using one of Tresob's helmets, so I might give a character a mouth instead of a faceplate if I know the helmet will provide the faceplate anyway.
    • If you're interested in printing these out for your own use, they are scaled at 600 dpi (which, I believe, is the same as mightyspacepope's), so the decals should be highly detailed.
    • I've tried to match decal colors to standard Kre-o plastic colors as best I can, mostly by eyeballing it. I got some really close (according to my own printer) like the purplish blue, but others like the red are kinda close but noticeably off.

    I hope you guys enjoy!

    In case anyone is curious:
Robohelmet: Victorious Chest Team by Tresob on Shapeways
Robohelmet: Jungian-bot by Tresob on Shapeways

I use Inkscape, which is a free vector graphics program.

I'm not sure what the cutting properties of static-cling stickers are, but if you're worried about odd angles, I've found that you can basically omit the side "pec" area (there's almost never any detail there) and cut a slightly-angled trapezoid using small, precise scissors. The straight lines should make it easy to cut out. Just make sure to use white paper -- if it's clear or frosted it won't look good since you (probably) can't print white ink.

Some of these are basically recolors or slight tweaks on my existing designs:

    • Stepper
    • Artfire
    • Hauler (assuming eHobby colors, since otherwise he'd look identical to Grapple)
    • Pipes
    • Outback
    • Hubcap (with 2 sets of feet depending on whether you like regular-height feet or shin-feet a la the SDCC set)
    • Skids

I'll try to tackle a small handful at a time so I don't feel overwhelmed by it. Here's a few "repaints":

Since this one is a "repaint" of Scorponok, I tried to mimic the original Kreon's chest decal. However, Scorponok was from the "preview" wave, which didn't have color in their tampos and their arms/legs were entirely plain. So, I gave Black Zarak a little more detail.

I'm still working on Freeway, trying to match the blues on my printer. I'm getting closer, as with Darkwing, but unfortunately, I'm a perfectionist

Ah, but with vector graphics, recolors are easy! I do use layers in my paint program, but that's just to hide the background "plastic" colors when I want to print onto clear water slide paper.

Speaking of recolors, here isn't one:

I'm personally using water slide decal paper, which can be expensive and a lot of work, but it does allow curved parts like the top of the legs to bend and adhere more closely.

As for Darkwing, I think the problem is that I designed him for the "medium blue" color. Siren uses the same color blue, and you'll notice it's a closer match for you. When it comes to figuring out the best color to use, it's up to personal interpretation to some degree since different sources (toy, toon, comics, etc.) may use different shades.

Also, I've noticed that medium blue seems to be a more common plastic color compared to purple-blue, so I tend to lean that way when it's unclear. If you do prefer the purple-blue color on Darkwing, it shouldn't be too hard to take any image editor and change the colors around to your choosing. In post #38 I attached a palette of Kreon colors to make it easier.

I'm just using sticky white postage labels - cheap and cheerful.

Battlechargers - faces changed to mouthplates and the face colors to match their bodies.

I went ahead and knocked out the Throttlebots. I tried to match their windshield shapes a little more closely and gave them some interesting foot decals.
