I'm in Wichita, KS and was shocked to see two copies of the PS3 version and two copies of the Wii version, Cybertron Adventures, at my local Sears. I didn't have a camera so I couldn't take pictures, but you can call my local store and confirm this - it's definitely out. Did anyone else see this at their Sears? I wonder if it's nationwide.

I didn't buy it because I already preordered my copy at GameStop (curse you, exclusive characters) but for those wanting to get their copy you should check it out!

    UPDATE ON WEDNESDAY:

It rang up. I took it to GameStop as proof and asked if I could get my preorder early, but the employee freaked out and wanted to get Sears fined and whoever sold the game to me fired. I told him I'd return my copy, and I did. I really don't want any trouble! Plus, I kind of want that Shockwave character anyway.

But for those of you who don't care, go for it. Apparently, returning the game won't matter as long as there's a record it sold. :(  Oops. But when I returned my copy to Sears and inquired about the street date, the employee at Customer Service (different from the one that sold me the game) said it wouldn't be breaking the street date if they already had it entered into the system. So.....yay?

They didn't give me any comic book, which I think is supposed to come with every copy sold at Sears and K-Mart. Or is that just a preorder thing?

It's possible they may have gotten some a bit early I suppose, but even then they still can't break the street date. If they sell it they can get into some deep shit. It could be that they may have gotten some in and someone just put it on the shelf without thinking. Either way it'll tell you on the register that you can't sell it anyhow, so unless the salesperson is either dumb or doesn't care about their job anymore then you won't get it from them.

I happen to work for Sears in the electronics department. I don't often see a game show up more then three days ahead of time, but you never know. Regardless my copy will just be collecting dust in the stock room until next Tuesday.

When I worked at Target years ago, I recall being told that the store would be fined if we broke Street Date, I think it was somewhere around $10,000 or something high like that. However, if it was on the floor and a customer wanted to buy it, we had to part with it. Sears has a policy against that?

Dude, if you can provide a picture of a recipt showing you bought it, other stores can break release date too.

He said he didn't buy it. He has it pre-ordered at Game Stop.

Haha, I didn't want to cancel my preorder at GameStop because the idea of playing as Shockwave was too alluring.

The games were on shelf pegs but there weren't any labels with prices, so it's possible they wouldn't actually sell it if I tried. I didn't bother talking to the one employee about it. I doubt he would've known what I was talking about with street dates and such, since he seemed very much the "dumb or doesn't care about their job" type. He was flirting with some girl while eating fries.... O_O

But at least you can see the box in person. :D  The back of the PS3 and Wii boxes look really similar, with a right side view of Megatron as the biggest picture. Something like "Now you can play as the Autobots and Decepticons to see how it all began!" and the Wii version has a little caption that says something like, "Exclusive Wii versions tell the origin story of the Transformers on Cybertron."

I thought about asking the GameStop people if they'd sell my copy to me early...do you think I should? If Sears already has them in stock, maybe GameStop does too? Would they really break the street date? Sears is like 30 ft away from the GameStop at the mall. I was thinking a GameStop employee could just walk over there and see for themselves if they needed proof.

Huh, I'm getting antsy, so while at Walmart a just a bit ago I figured I'd check for an early edition :lol . No luck though. Maybe I'll head to Sears.

    How's that work?

They were definitely the actual game boxes, inside larger clear plastic security cases.

If I get the time I'll try to run back tomorrow and get pictures.

Part of me believed him because he was watching E3 constantly. But a quick google search alter had me ready to end his life :lol

Glad this sort of proves that he really was lying to me

Not sure but I doubt it. There's just too much Sears could potentially lose for just fifty to sixty dollars. I'll try to remember to ask on Friday.

Doesn't matter how much a customer wants to buy something instore. The store has absolutely no obligation to sell it to a person. they can shout and scream and wave money in the face of staff, but still have no RIGHT to the item, regardless of whether it's on he shelf. It's the same with mispriced items, they can refuse to sell an item at the labeled price. They often will as an act of goodwill, but have no obligation to do so.

So stores can put the item out on shelves all they want. Doesn't mean its available yet.

This may be the case, but when was the last time you've seen a store refuse a sell? A returning customers trump all.

Negative. I've been told numerous times that I couldn't buy an item before the street date, even if it was already on the shelf. Stores will not sell an item before the street date unles the employee doesn't care about staying employed.

too true. I've refused a sale many times in my job. often as we didn't WANT the custom of the individual (drunks, troublemakers. etc...) plus with trade embargoes, even for a 60 game, it's illegal to make the sale and would cost the employee their job at worst, serious disciplinary action at best. The store would also be fined as well as potentially ceasing all futher business with the supplier. Really not worth it to make a sale. Very often a customer will be understanding of this and be happy to return later.

How many employees know their products and their street dates?

When I worked in Camera and Sound at Target years ago, I had people covering my area during breaks that didn't know jack about the products being sold there. A customer armed with a DPCI or enough information about the product they wanted, was usually good enough to get an employee to look in the backroom to locate the product for the eager shopper.

The store I worked at broke street date on Star Wars Episode I toys—the folks working in shipping and receiving were Star Wars geeks, as was I, opened a few boxes to get a look at the new toys—they didn’t put boxes with the other products due to go to the sales floor but on a pallet placed in shipping and receiving just for Star Wars products; however, an employee clearing carts in the backroom took a few boxes out and filled an end cap with toys not to be sold until a date I know longer remember. Needless to say, the toys sold out almost as quickly as they went out. No one knew what had happened until it was too late to do anything about it. The average cashier doesn’t know what products should or shouldn’t be sold, and those working the floor know the same or less.

No one was fired over the incident, as it was accidental, but we were told to be more cautious in the future.

I don’t think people try to break street date, but when you are ill informed it happens. Target used to (maybe still does) get items shipped in Waco Boxes, a box with like items packed inside it (eg all electronics, all cosmetics, clothing, etc.). These boxes are often used when the distributor divides items up between stores for fairness, demand or whatever. Items shipped in these sorts of boxes were the ones most likely to reach the sales floor sooner than later, as street date stickers weren’t slapped on them—Waco Boxes are basically wildcards.

A sales’ associate told to clear out Waco Boxes in the backroom or carts isn’t likely to know what’s what.

If the cash register tells the cashier not to sell the product, well that’s another matter; they didn’t do that when I was working them.

Well, that's why most major retailers now have lockouts on street dated items in the POS system. As I said, unless the cashier scans the item as something else, it's very difficult to "accidentally" sell before the street date.

Additionally, almost every street dated item I've seen working retail has a huge sticker or laber on the box the says "Don't sell before xx/xx". Any employee who misses that isn't paying attention.

This was true for Target too when I worked there; however, for reasons explained above, everything didn't come in a box of its own. Waco boxes are a thing of their own. No name, invoice, DPCI, nadda.
