Okay so I was wondering, for those that repurpose, what guidelines do you follow for repurposing. If you looking to have representation of character X in a toyline in which that character has no toy do you I'd assume a figure with similar alt would be the target but how important is the color scheme? or size class? What if the alt mode is unknown? I know that someone will answer: whatever guidelines you like its your collection. But, I'm interested in what my fellow repurposing collectors have to say so.....please discuss.

NOTE: in the case of the characters that have no actual character image I've decided that I'll look for decoes homaging their GIJoe namesakes...

 

Generally, if it's a similar colorscheme if not outright intentionally evocative of a character, I'll count it as a Classics figure since that's the only series I do repurposing, I.E. PCC Huffer as Classics Huffer, ROTF Bludgeon as Classics Bludgeon, and AllSpark/Movie 1 Mudflap as Classics Erector.

 

 


For me, it's similar. If the character's color scheme or design looks like the original toy, or if the design is similar. For example, my FoC Shockwave is my "G1 Shockwave" in my collection. Or until I get the FoC Skywarp, my Armada version fits with My G1s. (But that's also because I believe the trio of seekers should look different.)

I actually do most if not all of the currently listed repurposes or I would Magnus' case if I was still into the Wingsverse. But, I was looking for examples and input as far as different character repurposing like maybe Armadascream as a CHUG Aerialbot (aerialbot limbs get no love and he is a jet with a suitable color scheme) or BH Bulkhead as comic only CHUG Fang (green & orange deco close to green & yellow, big bruiser of a bot and BH spikeness reminds me of the character whose alt is unkown) or FoC Sideswipe as CHUG Lightspeed (futuristic red car) or something similar. Thank you guys!

 

There's only 2 "repurposes" in my collection and they're both supposed to be "Evil Clones" of a few Autobots (Kinda like how RiD Scourge was supposed to be an Evil Clone of Optimus Prime) Killer Bee and Dead End are these two.

In a few cases, Duplicates in my collection are meant to be Alternate-Universe versions of the same characters; The Masterpiece Optimus Primes are meant to be an example of this. MP-10, since he has his trailer is the one who is actually FROM this universe whereas MP-01 ended up in this universe by accident (Hence no trailer).

In some cases, the different versions of the characters are "Upgraded" from other toys (By means of one of Wheeljack's inventions; The upgrader). For example: G1 Metroplex was "Upgraded" into Generations Metroplex.

 

The TRU redeco actually is intentionally based on the colorscheme of the micromaster, since the alt. mode is a dead ringer for the micromaster's vehicle form when towing the crane cannon.

Oh, so non-intentional re-purposes?

Well, in that case, I have GDO Springer as Classics Crossblades (was originally my Springer, then the Voyager happened), ROTF Deluxe Smokescreen as Movie Ricochet, and HFTD Breacher as Classics Breacher.

 

So THAT'S what you did with the stolen MTMTE Star Saber prototype...

 

Was it the color scheme or the alt mode that made you chose Crossblades and Richochet as the repurposing. Or perhaps something else all together?

 

I have a few repurposed, the yellow mudflap from the cybertron line redeco is my Grapple and the blue Hot shot from prime is my Bluestreak, Override from the Cybertron line is Elita 1 ,oh and rotf Swerve is Sideswipe, I like that mold and think that is the best version for me. But that's all I can think of in my collection that are repurposed, they really fit well with my classics and generations though imo.

 

some things make sense like pcc and most hftd toys are g2 homages and should realy be treated as part of g2 classics shelf.

basicly any character that isnt in the movie that gets a toy thats a homage i place in the shelf

 

Hasn't happened often, but usually if a figure bears enough resemblance to a character than that's who he becomes. FOC Magnus is my updated AM Rollout(whenever I get around to buying him). He's blue sure, but the similarity in molding and even the actual face it just screams Rollout.

ROTF Mindwipe is my Classics version. This one was more of a ditching of one altmode for another for sake of modernization.

HFTD Oil Pan is my mini Bludgeon. There's just too many similarities to Bludgeon's Pretender Shell not to. I never got the voyager, but in my collection I always saw it as Bludgeon creating multiple forms as temporary bodies. To further his pretender origins he uses the mini body as a decoy.

I really have no set standards it's purely figure by figure basis. Usually something will hit me about a figure and I'll go digging to see if he actually fits another. Like HFTD Hailstorm as an updated AM Gutcruncher.

 

For me, it's about color scheme and a plausible alt-mode. For example, Cybertron Smokescreen looks enough (intentionally so) like Action Master Rad that I'm happy. Cybertron Armorhide for Pipes is another where the color scheme and alt mode line up pretty well. I haven't had a case where a figure hit both of those marks but somehow failed from a size/scale perspective. I don't stretch it too far, though. The wrong color is always a dealbreaker, and alt-mode matters in broad strokes (I wouldn't replace an obvious air vehicle with a land vehicle).

 

For me, it usually has to be the character. I'll repurpose by continuity, not typically by alternate figures. For example, TFCC Depth Charge gets repurposed as a pre-Earth Depth Charge even though officially he's a TransTech Depth Charge. IDW Thundercracker as FoC Thundercracker (ooh, official!). And so on.

 

My Wreckers shelf is a fantastic example of repurposing. My current lineup of repurposed figures in that one:

Animated Roadbuster Magnus got a new head and is my Roadbuster for now, and may stay in that role even after we get a Voyager Roadbuster from Hasbro. RB's supposed to be BIG.
Repainted Armada Tidal Wave with a new head is my Broadside. Again. Supposed to be a huge dude, he'll probably stay even if we get an official one.

Other repurposing I've done is HFTD Breacher is my MP Roller (wasn't sure about doing this until I found out that the new legends targetmaster roller is based off of Breacher), my SDCC Prime Shockwave is my G1 Shockwave, and my Darkside WFC Optimus Prime is my WFC Scourge. Haven't decided what I'm gonna repurpose my Darkside Megatron as yet, but I did think about just headcanoning it as a secondary "slave" body like Shockwave had in the WFC/FOC universe.

What head did you use for Roadbuster? I was thinking of doing the same. I did consider using BH Bulkhead, but he is too small.

It depends if the design aesthetic they have fits well enough to the line I want to put it along with. For example if I wanted to include HFTD Seaspray in my Prime Wreckers self as a representation of that version of the character I want to make sure if the design he has works well enough to fit into the Prime style. It works well enough.
