I always appreciated toys as a kid, had allot over the years despite not living near a toy meccas, told myself i'd always play with toys at 12(even tho i really didn't)...

So yeah i appreciate toys, my kids or my babies i should say are really young now, and i like looking at toys for them and what they like and so on. We already have mountains of stuff so it's important to keep on top of. I'm monitoring, what they grow out of vs what is sentimental, what they play with most and what they still need or have use for because we'll need to chuck/give-away loads of stuff as you accumulate tons so it's good to know what to keep and even what to get more of if they enjoy it.

Biggest hurdle is stuff they will get "crushes" on, heaven knows i'm still fallible.

Don't have kids (yet :lol ) but when I do some day I will never say to them they cant have a toy because he/she has a ton of the same type of figures. The only time I would say no is when we couldn't afford it.

Most kids know only want video games and the more expensive technology which the parents couldn't afford most of the time.

I definitely get a lot of stuff for my little ones. My eldest is big into Transformers, a lot of that is probably because of me. We watch the G1 cartoon together, and i trust him to play with most of my TF stuff. He also likes Star Wars, some GI Joe, and the Pixar stuff. I joke with him that he probably has more access to toys than most other kids his age.

These days when I buy stuff, the high end stuff is for me, but inevitably he will notice it and ask about it, and I will usually let him play with it as well. He's fiddled a bunch with my MP-10, MP Rodimus, some of the Encores, Omega Supreme, Sky Lynx, etc. He loves the "big and powerful" transformers. There are times when I will buy stuff and put it away to give him later as well.

I was fortunate enough to have a lot of toys while growing up and it made me really happy, so I guess I'm trying to create that for my kids as well.

If kids like something it doesn't matter how bad it is, if they enjoy it and play with it fine.

Thinking back when i was kid, so much cool stuff in the 80's, i did love transformers but the toys weren't the easiest to play with. I always found them frustrating because i didn't have enough of them or the ones i wanted and you had to be a bit careful with them...

Top two things i had fun with were the plastic soldiers and Lego, also GI Joes but Transformers were always the coolest. Mask toys were amazing though i didn't have any myself. There are some other really good lines i can't remember the name of. Thundercats was good and so was Heman. Star Wars is up there too. Luckily i inherited a bunch, an AT AT being the biggest thing. Parents made me pass them all on.

I'm somewhere in the middle. Just got out of college, so I'm still at home, but I do collect using the money of things I sell via ebay and the likes. My parents don't collect anything but as I started adjusting my TFs in certain places, they stopped being annoyed and started to accept it--primarily my HA Jazz that I got recently. My father saw the vehicle mode and thought it was pretty cool as a model and since he's into cars--

So it's up in the air, but they are more accepting than they were before.. lol. Dunno if this answers/fits into the thread at all, kinda lost my train of thought.

Being a toy collectors we know that the toys are not all the same. Even repaints have their differences. I pretty much let my son get what he wants within reason. But those toys sure add up.

We just moved to a new house and I made a room in the basement his play room. Here is some picks of some of his toys. There is more in his bedroom. Excuse the room, I'm in the process of repainting the walls and carpeting the floor.

^Wonderful pics. It's like a little boy's dream come true! We recently put that Big Millennium Falcon away in a closet due to the lack of space. My son still plays with AT-TE though, the sound effect is loud! :D

Me, too! Even though I had many toys when I was little, I did grow out of buying toys (while my brother continued on buying Gundam toys and Kits). It's all thanks to my older son and Micron Legend Jetfire that I am here :)

    I bought packets of those for my kids' cousin last Christmas. My sons and I thought they were rather pointless...then Star Wars Pods came out and it's so hard to resist getting them >_<;

I have a son, most of my house is full of his toys. Does me being a collector effect how many toys I get him... looks at the army of imagnext batman in my living room... possibly.

I made what I consider a mistake with my son when he was younger, I bought toys for him every time I bought them for me. He had everything - Starwars, Transformers, TMNT, Lego etc. I found that in the long run he didn't put much value in the things he had and it kind of ruined the fun he had with any individual piece. Now with my little Daughter I buy her what I think she needs but feel no guilt in just saying no. She seems to have more fun with fewer toys, and what really makes me happy is her lego skills. That takes a lot of creativity.

I think for parents who buy a lot of toys themselves it can be hard to just say no to the kids. Now I realize that my collecting is just that and doesn't mean I "owe" my kids something all the time.

Well my first child will be here in late May or early June... He/she will have toys for sure. How can I have so many without doing the same for them? Plus I'll be sharing what I have of course (certain ones :p ) But I understand the whole "they're all the same" perspective to non-collectors. I'm constantly defending that theyre not to my wife :lol  "but you already have Jazz, don't you?" "Uhm, not THIS Jazz!" "Fine, whatever I'll be in the grocery section". :)

My son has a whole heap of toys but his favourites are always Beyblades so am very happy for him to collect them. Has he more than his friends? No, not really they all seem to have loads but he does understand the value of stuff, as we make him save up and say no a lot! Still treat him all the time, difficult not to and the latest is a G1 Metroplex (just the robot and a couple of guns) but its a blast watching him use it as a base for Tfs and star wars toys. It's a tricky line to get right as you want them to enjoy toys as much as we did but not spoil them either. Loving Waveriders pics - toy heaven!

    Yes.

My four year old son loves Transformers like his dad and while too young for the regular ones, he has tons of Bot Shots and Cyberverse toys. My daughter loves my little pony toys and... dinosaurs. Two year old girl who loves dinosaurs..

My girls have way too much stuff, my Mrs is a childminder so they pretty much use all her resources too. The problem with that is they often don't respect their own things and I'm constantly on them at the moment to keep things together and in their place so they don't get ruined/lost but whatever does last does get handed down to the youngest.......along with more new stuff.

Funny thing is they are totally full of respect for my toys and anyone elses.....it's just their own but my eldest (who is nearly 8) has already started growing out of traditional toys and now wants a phone/laptop/tablet etc and I'm having to increasingly manage her expectations in regard to cost and age appropriateness.

Similar problem with my son who's 8, he loves his Bayblade but now also wants DS games / phone etc so doing our best to educate him as to how expensive stuff is.

Two year old daughter who's into dinosaurs and ponies? Nothing wrong with that. My 3 year old is the same but also has a weird liking for Scooby Doo - has the mystery machine and everything - but when you take a step back there are far too many toys. Not helped by a collector as a Dad, so they will probably both be hoarders.

Do you guys just buy stuff for your kids? I make mine earn his toys through saving money, rewarding for good grades and doing his chores.

We used to but it created a monster in our eldest. We still do on a smaller scale but behaviour charts are now in place and good behaviour results in more pocket money which results is more things they can buy........and it really works.

I personally think mine are too young for chores (I was laden with them from a young age and really resented it) but one thing they do need to do is keep their rooms tidy and that is a start. I think it really depends on age and what they can actually help/do in your own household.

I don't have kids, but this sounds like the way to go for me. Nothing wrong with treating the kid once in a while, as long as it's not so often they expect it, but I think they would probably value their toys more if they had to save and work for them.

When I first started buying TFs it didn't really matter, my older son and I both wanted TFs, and I bought the toys and we shared. At that time the younger son was only 2, so I only had to buy a Matchbox Car for him and everyone was happy.
As the second son got older and got into Star Wars, it became apparent that it didn't work anymore. During that time I started importing toys more, and I always made sure there were some SW figures in the parcel as well as TFs. That's until he turned 5 or so.

Now both my sons generally have to buy toys with tier own money. We give them $15 fortnight (granted they do their chores and keep their room tidy) and the older one is saving for a mobile phone.

I said "generally" because I still help them out with toys sometimes. For example, a Star Wars figure or a basic Lego set costs slightly over $15 here. When the sons find some "hot" item at the shop and a bit short of money, I give them a couple of dollars. That's another thing about me being into toys...I know the toy they want may not be there by the time they save up. Some figures are short-packed....I guess I'm still spoiling them :redface2:

    jametron - congrats!!!

My sons already have lots of toys including all of the Rescue Bots line. They have lots of Duplo blocks (not old enough for real Lego yet) and various trains. I probably buy them more toys than they need because I had lots of toys when I was younger and also like to see my kids enjoying them.

I also have lots of stuff for when they are older. I plan to let them play with my Lego collection (over 100,000 pieces), my modern GI Joes if they like them, and some of the TF collection.
