i got my misb masterpiece grimlock today and one of his chrome tailpieces has a large seriously discolored/gunky looking splotch on it.

    1. was this a common problem?

    2. what is the best way to clean it up (i hope it can be cleaned) without damaging it?

I've found that for fingerprints, a soft dry cloth can be used to gently wipe them off.

When I do this I never have problems with smearing.

Use your fingernail to gently peel or scratch it off.

Use a soft dry cloth to polish the chrome after you get the "gunk" off.

    Soft cloth first.

And if it was a first run Takara version, watch the screws inside the tail pivots: They can end up scratching the chrome on the tail.

so there is no "magic bullet" then? the way this gunk looks tome it i don't think the soft cloth is going to do much good without something else in the equation.

sucks you spend $140 on a MASTERPIECE and you get something like this...

also i dont think i did a good job explaining it. if you touch the "spot" it has no texture. its kind of a cloudy/hazy/grey discoloration that is darker in some spots and lighter in others.

im kinda thinking im just screwed here. the cloth did NOTHING.

Try spending $200 on an MP Rodimus and it not even holding together.
Takara don't really care too much. People will buy anyway.

    Post a picture?

    You're not entirely sunk.

If you can't clean it off, and can't return, you could send the tail sections to a place called Chrometechusa.

They do very good work, although their turn around is several weeks from what i remember.

Removing those tail sections can be tricky though... the screws tend to be very tight, so you'd need a perfect fit screwdriver.

This stuff works wonders, I used it on MP Megatron as well as every other chrome surface I need to clean.

This stuff is a magic bullet. Don't scrape or rub anything else on your chrome. You can find it in grocery/drug/hardware stores. It costs about $5 for a can and will last forever. Just tear a pea-sized piece of the wadding off and buff out the blemish!

After you used it on MP Megatron did you have to continue using it or does it protect the surface as well? I cleaned the cosmic rust on mine once but it just came back so I never bothered to do it again. I didn't want to clearcoat it.

It stayed off. And I even lived in a high humidity area at the time.
