What really bothers me is when Prime's chest cheats. Bugs the crap outta me.

The worse culprit by far is Bay-Bee. How the EFF does his license plate become his crotch piece. It's so inaccurate that he still has a fake crotch license even in the big pieces such as ultimate, battle ops & leader bee.

Its not like its a new trend, its been happening since the beginning and will continue to happen until they invent actuall mass shifting technology.

Mass-shifting has nothing to do with tires in the wrong spot? They stay the same size.

I don't mind it too much in certain circumstances. Like license plates. There is no way you're going to get Bumblebee's license plate to go from near his foot, to his abdomen. It's just not going to happen. In that case, it's okay. Also, Prime Voyager Optimus Prime's cheat for the chest is also okay, since it covers the original part on robot mode. But if you can see the original part in robot mode, as well as the false part, then I don't like it.

I completely agree, specifically on that last bit.

Good topic. This has been a pet peeve of mine too, since they did alt tracks. That one gave me mixed feeling because as a g1 gan i appreciate it but as a designer/modernist it bugged me, form follows function n all that. Actually in hindsight it wasnt new. G2 prime had the faux windshield pecs. Same thing with tfa bb and more since.

But theres been some example where its done with flair. Legend g1 starscream made for good transformation. Its a credit to the designers in thinking laterally. But its a double edge sword. Its brilliant when done right (mp rodimus another example, working around the problem of diff. Proportion of hot rods hood and rodimus cab). When it falls flat it makes the toy look like a knock off.

I get irked or not to varying degrees on a case-by-case basis. Perhaps we need a checklist and can give each a score from 0 - 5, with zero being not at all bothered and five being utterly incensed.
For example, fake windows chest on '07 Bay Voyager Optimus I'd give a 1. It's a little disappointing to see but the figure itself turned out quite nice overall considering it was a first go in that size and the big backpack doesn't bother me. Fake front on the roof of '07 Bay Legends Jazz is a 5 for me as it just looks stupid in alt mode and really he could've been easily designed with the front of the car actually becoming the chest. I could maybe knock that one down to a 4 since I guess they were trying to do something a little different, but it just looks so bad in alt mode so I won't.

Prime Revealers Cliffjumper is a big offender with his ugly molded red wheels on the back of his upper legs...

I don't really mind it. But I would prefer more sculpted weaponry, or actuators or vents. Even sculpted battle damage. I like it when the dedicated "robot" parts of the toy have the space to reflect that more than trying to appeal to show accurate placement of vehicle mode parts. I get why the movie toys do it. They get a robot model and licensed vehicle model, and do their best to work with it even when the render itself has to cheat. But with Hasbro cartoons having more direct controll of what models would be possible for a toy transformation. Hopefully they will avoid extra wheels and chest windows.

I do not mind too mutch if they cheat. The only one I absolutly can not stand is the cheat on powermaster prime. He has the full cab on his front and his back. He is my favorite transformer but it almost ruins it.

I freaking loathe the fake wheels on the legs of movie Optimus.
    Should have left them off.

I think that falls into the same category as Laser Ops and BW Megatron's Transmetal chests and God knows how may TFs' helmets/heads. Not meant to be the actual vehicle mode parts, just robot parts styled after the at mode.

Though of course they don't really do that anymore with exceptions like Animated Bumblebee.

They're aesthetically unncecessary too as his actual wheels almost end up there as it is. Doesn't stop him being ace though.

On the back of his legs, but I didn't even notice them until someone pointed them out to me. They just look like...robot bits.

As for the whole "not putting fake molded bits in"...that's how a lot of these toys are possible. I would rather have an awesome transformer with fake bits than no transformer at all (or worse, G1 bricks with plenty of authenticity but sucky transformations and posability).

    I dunno.

When they can fake excellent robot modes such as TFP First Edition Voyager Optimus Prime, I think it's perfectly fine and a fair trade off. I mean, sure his chest windows are cheats but his actual cab windows actually do sit in the right place, only to be covered up behind the fake ones. Not only that, but the molded detail within the cab interior (complete with center dash console and a steering wheel) are things the designers didn't have to do but gave us anyway.

OK, and his shoulder guards are also cheats since they sit within the nose of the truck, and the actual wind vane atop the truck become his heel spurs. But you know what, FE Voyager Optimus looks SO spot on to the CGI model while RiD Powerizer Optimus (even with his real transforming chest windows) isn't so much. I'd rather they cheated a little and give us great-looking robot modes as a result, than not cheat at all and give us mediocre- or horrible-looking robot modes, y'know?

I agree with you on the fake tires, it is a bit silly - especially on TFP Bulkhead. I don't mind fake bits like windshields, hoods, horns and such as long as the alt mode bits that they're supposed to imitate fold away somewhere/end up out of sight.

I personally like them. I know there's a few examples of this in TFA, but the best one I know of is Sentinel Prime's chest which is a fake front to the vehicle. From what we've seen of Prime Wheeljack, I also like how the windshield works. I can see how some people would view it unfavourable though. I suppose DOTM Voyager Optimus is being treated as the poster boy for this thread, but I wouldn't be able to say since I don't own him. Don't plan on owning him either because I just find the entire figure displeasing, especiall when you compare him to the HFTD Voyager Optimus.

I understand and accept the fake parts on movie toys. But ffs, at least paint or mold the fake parts in the right colors. DotM Voyager Optimus with fake tires on his legs is excusable. DotM Voyager Optimus with fake GRAY tires on his legs is not. It's already bad enough they didn't paint the legs and waist silver to match the upper-waist and abs. That looks jarring on its own. But to have the entire legs and fake tires all be one color is ridiculous.

For me, the real negative issue with the DotM line is not the fake molded parts, but the complete lack of necessary paint and the horrible color separation. If they are going to give me toys this unpainted, I'd rather they just sold them to me unassembled, too, so that they'd be easier for ME to paint.
