The set up sounds fine for starters. The biggest thing you can do is get set up, then set a custom white balance on your camera. If you can do that the colors should be decent, although some post-editing to auto-level the colors will probably still help. I do that for nearly all my photos.

I think you would do fine as a start and once/if you develop it as a hobby, you could see how you would like to advance further. This is just to share my setup; I use a point and shoot as well.

results have been decent with this so I believe you would be able to do so too :)

*found the old pic of Jazz which this setup was shooting*

    Anyway, on with the pics...

its hard to fit all that in and keep it black. The light bleeds into the shot. I use matt foil and not direct light but this set up with infinite black background works best for small subjects.

I'm going to have to post a disagreement here. This is why cameras come with white balance. When I was doing the white-whites I was using 250 WATT Photo Bulbs that definitely had the tungsten yellow tint. Setting white balance on the camera to tungsten cleared it right up. People often focus on the type of light they are getting when in reality, provided you can set your camera properly, it's more about having even light than it is about having a specific type.

Thanks. Because I was still taking the next lot and I felt the first two belonged together.

Which is the direction I went after getting a DSLR.

I really need to start shooting again. Gotta make a spot for the photo setup among all the guitar amps. TOO MANY HOBBIES.

Damn, I sure as hell didn't know THAT. That's really cool.

    ... wow.

Anyways, I didn't like the clarity on Inferno, since I'd done it still handed, so I used the timer for the next replacement shot:

I need a more consistent steady hand for sure. Hopefully it comes in time.

I built 2 light boxes using T-shirts and cardboard boxes before I just scrapped both and bought this.
Mini Portable Photo Studio Lights 4 Backgrounds & Stand | eBay

I'd highly recommend it to save yourself the time and energy.

I didn't like using T-Shirt material to diffuse the light. It simply wasn't enough so I ended up with harsh light and reflections I didn't want. The above tent is made out of synthetic material that is mildly reflective. Kinda like parachute material but thicker. I use a pair of 100w Full spectrum bulbs in the $7 dollar clip-on utility lights you find at the hardware store. Occasionally using a desk lamp for front spot lighting. Always set your white balance if you can on your camera. Or shoot raw and do it in post processing.

No kidding man, that's some gorgeous work. I should really switch back to my black background.

Get some Tri-pod action up in dat B, TJ. Seriously, a good photo tri-pod is fracking amazing. You can really control the angle, height, tilt etc... and the best part it stays as long as you like. :)

I love mine. Takes the pressure off. I can take my time. Take a shot. Pull out my card, check the shot on my computer. Pop it back in, adjust an angle, adjust my focus or whatever I need to do to get a better shot. You can really dial things in.

One of the things I have been looking at is a Wifi Memory card. There is an IPad app that uses this. So basically, what you can do is leave your Camera taking pictures, not have to remove any card and display the picture you just took on your IPad. Over all it is pretty cool.

I have used my tripod before and cannot stand the fact that my point and shoot camera's sd slot is blocked by the tripod base. Very annoying. Also, I think the Wifi Memory Card will help me see how the pictures look better. A 9" screen is better then a 4" screen to see the smaller issues with a photo.

If anyone uses this currently, can you let us know your experiences with it?

Shit, my mistake. I misunderstood your last sentence. What did you mean?

"I need a more consistent steady hand for sure. Hopefully it comes in time."

How is this one? Is this any different then the one you posted?

24" Photo Tent Studio Tripod Light Photography Box LS09 | eBay

It is just a bit cheaper and free shipping. Not sure if the material on these is any cheaper.

    Thanks for the help btw.

The lights on that are weak as hell. You want the aluminum reflectors. They really help spread the light. Check out amazon, you can read reviews on those type of kits. This company is solid. I bought from them.

I was referring to the pictures that I take by hand. . LoL. I understand this is all about lightbox shennanigans, but I like to take outside pics and the like too, so I don't always use a tripod.

The previous inferno pic. I used a tripod, but instead of setting the timer, I just focused and shot with my hand and it shook the cam some.
