TJ I really like your shots of Unicron (especially the one in this thread: http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers-toy-discussion/431964-amazon-exclusive-unicron-14.html). Can you share your lighting set up in those shots? Is it a black/grey posterboard and 2 lamps?

I also read you use a D7000, was that so in this and what lens and aperture settings?

The reason I ask is that I find I have trouble getting enough depth of field with toy shots because of the close range even with high aperture settings. But you seem to get some good DOF there.

I am considering getting a smaller sensor camera like a crop body such as your D7000, or maybe even a point and shoot which should have tons of DOF but am not knowledgeable about those (I shoot a D700 btw).

 

That third one of movie tank decepticon (did they call him Devastator?) is AWESOME. It looks so detailed, was it custom painted?

i think u need to take more pics of the transformation process best you can. like 10 or so to give it a more fluid movement and not so static maybe? maybe work backwards. take the first pic of the figure in the end and work backwards transforming him.

are u using photoshop? i know how to make a transparent layer but are you taking the photos and cropping out the back ground of the figure and then making transparent and just layering them in?

As for all the rest: A lot of what you said has completely gone over my head. I'm relatively new to all of this and I'm just playing it by ear and asking questions as I go.

The problem is that the backdrop is in every image, Adjusting the transparency will help, but the more layers added the fainter the images becomes. I'm trying to avoid a big matte cutting process, I wanted to make something that wouldn't take hours for just one photo. I'm still toying with it might come back to it in a week or so.

I don't mess with aperture, so default.

Honestly, even though DSLRs are fun, some of my absolute BEST up close shots were with my Fujifil Finepix z5. even though I'm new to this, I can see where a lot of point and shoots without a lot of aperture have their advantages already.
