Also, is it a slow sales month in June? This promo AND the "anything over $500, no fees" selling promo... makes me wonder if it's a slow month for eBay... June is vacation month for many families, and September is back-to-school, so maybe slow sales = eBay promos?

 

It does seem like they tend to throw these flash sales up RIGHT before they cash out quarterly Ebay Bucks. Might be a coincidence.

Yep. The Platinum release strategy seems to be "Release at stupid high price to get the people with disposable income who will buy it regardless, drop it stupid low a few times for brief sales to catch the people who are on the fence, then settle at a price in between the two."

Platinum/Year of xx series, simply were cash grab repaints meant for Asia (mainly China/HK) market, taking advantage of asymmetric distribution. Of course here we think differently about paying those MSRP.
