In order to get Arcee into Armcee form and keep her stable, her normal(no knife) arm has a wheel shaped gear near the elbow that can peg into a hole as seen in this picture

And on top of that, the three bikes formed what looked like reversed "7" shapes and looked like a three-lined spiral. I'd post a pic, but I lack the one I am refering to. I also located the picture I was refering to:
So it looks like Chromia and Flareup/Elita-1/whateverthehellhername is form the arms (with the latter possessing the head of the combined form), and Arcee forms the body's base and one support wheel system. Original is ALL PURPLE. |

I don't get why this was ever mistaken for the combined mode, since it was clear from the panel that it was only Flare-up transforming. |

One, that picture looks nothing like the concept art for Flare-Up/Elita-1; that art shows the bike with a wheel making up the entire left hand
Two, that wheel-foot is way too small in proportion to the rest of the robot for it just to be one bike transformed.
Coloring errors happen all the time. If I showed you a picture that proved that there were actually two Starscreams in the G1 cartoon, you'd (hopefully) point out that one of them was obviously a coloring error. |
