Hi. I dont know if this has been discussed...it seems you all take it for granted or assume everyone knows it.

Well, I was wondering, about the boxes and cardboards of the toys. I know its because of collectible factor, that, taking the toys out of their original packagings renders them not collectible or so. Or decreases its condition a lot. A new toy out of its packaging its no longer in perfect mint condition, right?

I was thinking, why is that? Its because its the only proof of complete perfect mint condition? Logically. But i also think, if you take out a toy and keep it in a really safe place, maybe a glass box, protected from dust, sunlight, scratches, never play with it, only display, etc..., keeps it in a condition practically very similar to that in the interior of the packaging.

The collector could keep the packaging...Honestly I always have trouble getting rid of the packages of the toys...theyre almost always cool, and smeel nice xD...And i keep most of them. In any case, if you wanted to sell a toy, you could reinsert it in the packaging and maybe reseal it. No, im not saying to scam the poor guy you wanna sell it to, telling him/her its brand new, but I have heard about people that take out the toy and keep the boxes. Years later, they sell it, and their value is not greatly diminished if the toy is in mint condition, in part because the seller kept the packaging and the manuals etc.

I mostly ask, because I am someone who really takes care of what I buy. Whatever it is. And even i take my Transformers figures out of their packagings, they are kept in virtually perfect condition. I wouldnt be able to do what most collectors here do, keep them packaged, i dont think i would be able to resist temptation. But i know there is a good reason for this, and that is collectibility...(is that a word? xD). I never buy them to resell them later, I buy them because i love them and i want to keep them with me.

Maybe its because i keep them in such good condition out of their boxes, that i believe its possible to keep a figure virtually as they were the day they were produced.

Any thoughts on this?

 

condition is only a factor if your 1 of 2 things 1 a collector who may resell his collection as somepoint or 2 a collector who is all about the MISB factor

as for me i collect for the love of the figs and i set them free as soon as i can

Not necessarily, I like my TFs to be in as close to mint as poss. Wheather thats a g1 Sunstreaker that I've restored, or a universe2.0 Sunstreaker from Walmart. I dont plan on ever re-selling my collection. I also keep the packages for all my TFs. My thinking is, if they ever need to go in some kind of storage for whatever reason, they have extra protection.

 

There is MISB (mint in SEALED box) and MIB (Mint in box)
I can say that most of my 07 Movie to current figs are MIB because i cannot stand not being able to hold and examine a fig.
i have one RotF Ransack that is MISB and that is only because he is already in bot mode.

My Encore Ratchet is MIB- i opened it, kept everything in plastic except the figure. transformed him once, then repackaged it.

am NOT selling my collection. and yes, i keep all my cardbacks and boxes- twisties and plastic insterts/bubbles are trashed on my loose figs.

 

I do this with my boxed TF. I still get to enjoy transforming the figure and displaying it (which generally seems to be the cry people have against those that keep TF boxed), but then when I need more room for displaying new figures I'll repackage some others for storage. Useful if I wanna sell any (not that I plan to), or they make much nicer gifts if I fancy giving someone a TF from my collection if they have the box and inserts and everything. I think it's as much an OCD thing I clicked onto at some point too.

Problem with sealed toys is nobody has been able to examine if for bad paint apps or QC issues. I wouldn't pay top dollar in 10 years for Universe Prowl sealed. I'd want to know if he had f'd up sticky paint, and buying one loose would give me the opportunity to ask about that.

 

Yea, the quality control is horrendous these days. I bought a Universe Sunstreaker from Hasbro.com & it looked like someone took a wire brush to a 1/2" square on the hood plastics. The first Transformer I bought (last year in May) was Stockade from TFTM & the plastic on that figure when I first opened it was scratched up as if it had been played with for years. Thats why I really don't care to keep my toys in their packaging...since they are usually abused-looking brand new. I took some polish to the hood of my sunstreaker & stockade & now the plastics look great.

I can see why people want things MISB/MOSC but I can't stand keeping them in there unless I buy a repaint of a mold I already opened previously. Imported figures are a different story. Quality control is much better on the Takara stuff & I would consider leaving some of those MISB if I ever bought any.

I personally keep all packaging/twisties even on my deluxe & scout figures. I cut the bubble on both sides & bottom with a razor blade & flip the top up to pop the figure out. The bubble still looks like its sealed if I ever wanted to re-pack the figure & display it in its bubble. Only problem is how much space that takes up..I have about 30 bubbles stacked up in my closet already.

 

Another positive for reboxing TF after you're done with them on display. You get everything as if new, with the added comfort of the seller being able to tell you exactly the condition of the figure inside. No good for carded TF because the packaging is wrecked opening them, but then I only repack my boxed TFs. Although I have kept the cards and bubbles for my Japanese ROTF Legends Constructicons because the cards have been designed so I can open them without damaging the card or bubble.
But again, I have no intention of selling anything so I think it's just OCD habit now.
