devastator and the other combiners

    How come after devastator all the combiners following were made up of 5 robots instead of 6 like devastator? Anyone else ever think about this?

    Devastator wasn't the only 6 bot combiner. Dinoking/Monstructor, the Micromaster combiners, Liokaiser, Landcross, and Phiranicon were all 6 bot combiners.

    And there are also 4-member, 3-member and 2-member combiners as well.

    Anyone got a quick and dirty list? I've tried searching the resources and can't search by that criteria.

    The Constructicons and the subsequent combiners weren't designed the same way. The main difference is that the main body on the remaining US G1 combiners (save Monstructor) were made of one, usually larger figure (Onslaught, Silverbolt, Hun-Gurr, etc.) whereas Devastator's torso consisted of both Hook and Longhaul. It made the resulting gestalt more stable and allowed for the Scramble City style limbs that could be swapped around into multiple configurations.

    Technically Piranhacon is a five bot combiner with the extra figure as a Targetmaster/gun.
