Shockwave is pretty awesome, if for nothing else than being a new version of Shockwave. I think Prime is a total waste of time and should only be bought if you plan to convert it to Ironhide.

Personally speaking, I still think Hound is THE must-buy of this series, followed closely by (to my own surprise) Tracks. Both are incredibly faithful to their original G1 counterparts and aren't a nightmare to 'play' with like most of the other Alts are.

    My two cents anyway.

Mirage, Grimlock, and Tracks are my top three.

Windcharger, Prime, and Swindle are my bottom three.

For my money though the best Alternators are the ones that we the fans had to make.

    Prime into Ironhide
    Nemesis Prime into Trailbreaker
    BT Red Alert into Prowl
    Prowl into Red Alert

Rumble is also very nice but probably is too expensive by now.

My favorites are Rodimus, Hound, Silverstreak, & Jazz(with reprolabel stickers). Shockblast is a nice update to the character. If you do not have a shockwave this is a good one. I agree only get prime if you want to convert him to Ironhide(this is easy to do and makes a nice Ironhide). The second edition of Ravage is awesome.

I have most of the molds. Out of the Subaru Alternators, Silverstreak is the better one in my opinion. But if you like it to be busy in appearance, Smokecreen is very good, particularly the BT versions. Jazz and Hound are very good. Shockwave/Shockblast is pretty good.

My bottom three are Prime and the Twins

    In terms of customs

I recommend a BT Prowl to be converted to Red Alert, which only requires switching of heads and reprolabels.
BTA Red Alert -->Prowl is very easy and it is switching of heads and reprolabels
If you do not want to the swap and you only have Prowl, you can mod the legs for better articulation and more G1-ish
Anime Bluestreak from Silverstreak, you would need to get Ricochet.

I like the BT Argent Meister quite a bit. It's definitely a thing of beauty.

Mirage and Jaguar Ravage are nice, too, but kinda expensive...

If you like Silverstreak you'll like the Jazz mold. Shockwave is the best version of that mold in the Alternators toy-line. But, if you don't mind paying the extra cash, go for Binaltech Jazz/Meister.

I have all of the molds I believe, and most of the variants, so I've got some good experience with these.

    Top Molds

Mirage/Rodimus - One of the most poseable and well-balanced of the Alternators. Either one of these is awesome. I would consider getting at least one a must, and preferrably both.

Windcharger/Decepticharge - This one slips under most people's radars, but this is a very good mold. It's extremely clean... almost no kibble in robot mode. If you can get the Binaltech version, he has the full gun, but beware paint chipping.

Prowl/Camshaft - Seems Stockier than the other Alts... almost an Alternator Spychanger, as far as Transformation and overall look goes, but that's not a bad thing.

Grimlock/Wheeljack - Frustrating to transform, but awesome in both modes. Wheeljack is probably my favorite of the two decos... one of the best Wheeljack headsculpts EVER. Poseable and stable... if you can get a Binaltech arming kit, it fits Grimlock PERFECTLY.

The best mold is the Meister/Shockwave one.

My favorite is Mirage, but I'm also partial to Jaguar Ravage, Rumble and Windcharger. Shockblast is really nice (I actually prefer him over Jazz) and much better than the Prime mold.

I own all the main molds except for the ravage and rumble which will be here early next month. The Subaru and rx-8 are kind of sister molds. So if you like one you like the other. I would say get both rx-8 molds. With the prime mold I would say get nemisis cause the he looks good in those colors. I've been happy with all of them so far.

XK Ravage, Mirage and Meister are my faves.

The Prime mould is alright, but definitely not the high point of the line, and look better in black. However Shockwave is pretty good.

The OP did not mention a price range, so I will ignore that as a factor.

Silverstreak is my personal favorite, but there's a few things that factor into that.

Mirage/Hot Rod is regarded, by the majority, as the best alternator mold that's come out, with very good reason. A complex, but not too fiddly transformation, a super-sweet car mode, and a very articulated bot mode. His gun(s) kinda suck(s), though. Very small.

Jazz (Meister) and Shockblast probably are the one mold that got the most retooling (though perhaps Decepticharge may have that honor, I'm not sure), but it's an absolutely fantastic mold. I used to have both, sold em both, and regret it, because they weren't sold for anything important. I prefer Jazz's bot mode, but Shockblast has the sweeter ride.

I already told you that Silverstreak is my personal favorite, but I'm including him on the list anyway. I'd like to get ahold of a BT Smokescreen, to be honest.

Tracks is another great mold. I have the yellow BT version, and yes, the paint chips. There are die-cast metal painted parts that rub against other parts. It's going to happen. He's my number 2, again, primarily for personal reasons, but it's a great, great mold. I would have picked up the blue alt version, but I was very anti-repaint at the time, and I felt like I'd just be out $20 if I bought the hasbro one to just be disappointed. Kinda wish I'd been more open minded.

Prowl is another good one, but he's a lot simpler. Looks good in both modes, but if you want G1 accuracy, he loses. He's fun, looks good, and has a lot going for him as a toy, though... depends on what you want.

As for the rest... I have Alt. Swindle, Alt. Sideswipe, BT Dead End and Alt Windcharger. I sold my Alt. Grimlock and Alt. Prime. Grimlock is good, but very fiddly, I couldn't figure him out to not be difficult to transform. Prime is generally regarded as the worst mold, with good reason. Sure, he looks awesome in bot mode, and if you're into pickups, he's a pretty sweet truck... but the legs kinda suck, and he's got a fairly uninspired transformation. Swindle/Hound is OK, but forgettable, as is Windcharger... I've never had a Decepticharge, but he's probably not worth the money he demands these days. I like my Sideswipe pretty averagely, but my BT Dead End is fabulous. You'll have to decide how much you like the bot mode, but the weight of the die-cast and the remold (I take back what I said earlier, I think this mold may have gotten the most remolding) makes him pretty awesome. The black and red is simply badass.

If you want something that's nearly the same as Silverstreak, from your post, definitely pick up Shockblast. The transformation schemes are very similar. If you want something new, go with Mirage/Hot Rod. That's my opinion. I suggest you gather opinions on what are good ones, and then gather opinions on the ones you're interested and go from there. Hope I could offer some insight. :)

Jazz/Meister is perfect. Smokescreen looks amazing (the BT moreso than the Alt though) and Hound, Streak and Tracks are fantastic G1 updates.

I only have 4 of them: Hound, Sunstreaker, Smokescreen and Grimlock.

As many have already said, Hound is awesome... personally I really like Streaker more than most it would seem, but Grimlock is my favorite by far! Sure, he's not a T-Rex, but his Mustang mode is sweet for starters, and his bot mode is teh c00l IMHO. Something about his bot mode just trumps the others (that I have)... as has also been said his transformation (the arms!!!!) is 1/2 a nightmare, but mine rarely goes into alt mode anyway.

Swindle, Deadend, and Mirage (or KP Hot Rodimus if you feel like hunting out Takara's version - it's the signature red/white GT colour scheme). The car modes are cool, the colour schemes rock, the bot modes look great and Swindle & Mirage/Hot Rod are particularly poseable.

(I am basing my choices on the Binaltechs, but I'm not aware there's any significant design or paint differences between those mentioned and their Alt counterparts. Mirage & the Alt Rodimus are the exceptions, as they're obviously very different looking from KP Hot Rod.. but Mirage still rocks :)  )

Shockblast is pretty cool...you will not be disappointed with him if you get him.

He gets my vote over Alt Prime.

I only have 2 Alts: Hound and Battle Ravage. Hound is pretty awesome, but I have to say I like Battle Ravage a little better. Sure, he's simply a black alt. Tracks given Decepticon symbols and a cat head, but I think Battle Ravage is still awesome beyond words. Well, except that horrible door hinge that makes TFing the legs an absolute pain, as it requires WAY to much force on the legs to clear the oversized bolts. At least Robot mode still kicks all kinds of @$$ for me.
