I found a pic of the G1 version and he was blue....But the universe version is a completely different coloring (duh). Can anyone help me understand the origin of this color of dropshot?

I think they wanted to make him a Decepticon to keep some amount of evenness in the universe factions. I mean, if they made him an autobot then the factions for universe through wave 3 would be

Autobots
Prowl
Sunstreaker
Blades
Blaster
"flak"
Powerglide
Silverbolt
Ironhide
Sideswipe
Bluestreak (Silverstreak)

Decepticons:
Octane

By the looks of him it seems to me they were trying to go for a swamp camo look and just picked a name on the closest G1 homage.
