post- G1: JRX/ Railracer. That thing is so awesome!
There are a shitload of even better combiner robots out there (all non Transformer) if you are looking for something cool. Look for Soul of Chogokin stuff and the masterpiece Voltron.

Maybe not everyone's first choice, but I loved the mix of sea monsters we got on this guy. Plus, he's able to use one of his guys as a gun and can mix and match his limbs to give himself a different gun to handle the situation.
Oh, and did I mention the sweet sword? The co-ordinated colour scheme (well, it's close to co-ordinated!)? The sheer awesomeness that is Seawing?
Modern: Magnaboss. Tough choice between him and Rail Racer, but Magnaboss has added sentimental value. You've got three 'bots who merge into one big bot, Silverbolt is cool and Ironhide is awesome, but the combined form takes it to another level! He brings across an awesome tribal cheiftain look and carries a suitably cool sword, not to mention chest missiles and the poseable tusks on Ironhide!
Sentimentally, he is what got me interested in Beast Wars enough to dig further. While it was a little while after I got into the line before I bought him, his look got my attention for long enough to convince me to try the line out, therefore, Magnaboss is responsible for getting me back into TFs!
