Our look at the 1987 range of Generation 1 Transformers continues this week with the three basic Decepticon Headmasters Skullcruncher, Mindwipe and Weirdwolf. While the Autobot Headmasters introduced in the same year were land and air vehicles, the Decepticon counterparts were beasts. 1987 also saw the release of Decepticon Headmaster base Scorponok and Headmaster Horrorcons Apeface and Snapdragon, but we will cover those three in a future article. The plan was originally to release four basic Decepticon Headmasters to face off against the Autobots, but plans for the stingray Decepticon Headmaster were canned. Here then is our look at Skullcruncher the crocodile with Headmaster Grax, Weirdwolf the wolf with Nebulon partner Monzo, and Mindwipe the bat with Headmaster partner Vorath.

Cheers dude! A few guys had the genius idea of putting the Horrorcons with Scorponok under "1987 Decepticon Headmaster triplechangers", to make more of an article than just 2 figures. As soon as I find a good Apeface box, it's happening :)

Weirdwolf was my first Headmaster. He was also among the first 5 mint complete G1s when I got back into Transformers during the G2 era.

He was the most articulated of the 3 Decepticon Headmasters. He had both elbow and knee joints vs the other 2 which had one or the other.

But yeah, being shorter made him less menacing when displayed.

Skullcruncher was my 2nd favorite...even with the ridiculous place to store the head.

We'd need a name, a bio, a Nebulon name and design....see I'm already excited, a 3rd party company needs to not worry about getting us a 4th set of MP Insecticons and sort out a Headmaster stingray in G1 blocky style!

I think all the things that were planed back then and never released, 3rd party should make like the double pretender and others in that vault book max!!

Skullcruncher was one of my first transformers (as a mid-80s kid) and I still have him in semi-complete condition, unlike the bulk of my 80s transformers. He was built like a tank. He's one I've constantly been on the lookout for in still sealed condition, but he hasn't been easy to find.

    Great article as always, Maz.

Call me crazy, but maybe the stingray could be a G1 version of Depth Charge? Not sure about the partner's name, though. Needs to fit in with the other Nebulan names.

You're crazy! :lol  He needs to be a brand new character with a suitably head-related name! Fishface! Lazergills! Flathead! Aquanoodle!

Jawbreaker, as Jaw for the head part and breaker can also mean wave so fitting for his alt mode? I know its in beast wars but its not like they didn't reuse g1 names.

Maybe corsair as his head master name and generally make him sound like a pirate.

And yes FP totally need this guy in the function x line.

I got Mindwipe for Christmas '87 - I was crazy about him! His deco, alt, and bot mode were definitely the most attractive of the three to me.

Ha, didn't know Mindwipe was the least intelligent of the Headmaster Decepticons. You'd think as a arcane hynotist he'd actually be the most intelligent... could he be a sly 1980's view of Hasbro's distain for psychics?

Good article. It was an interesting read.

That looks very cool. It seems a like a nice a nice streamlined design, even for its time.

    Questions:

Does anyone have idea as to why this figure would have been cancelled?

You mentioned a fourth Targetmaster jet? Are there any concept images?

    Thanks.

Also, could some third party please do a figure based on this concept?
