after having him for about 7 years and I found it to be extremely... Fun! Seriously not trolling here as that's probably what you're thinking right now. I've had no desire to transform him because of all the stories of how hard it is and broken figures so he's just been on the shelf. But now I've got the superior Apollyon so mp05 has been sitting in my basement and since handling him just a little he's become a floppy disaster just lying on a table so I figured I'd try to transform him. It took about 30 minutes because I took my time carefully studying how everything might go together and once I was done I felt great. It was a fun and mildly challenging experience and it was awesome. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? Letting the hype drive you away only to realize that it's not even close to as bad as it's made out to be.
Don't have MP-05, but I transformed MP-09 through all of his modes and back a few weeks back and it was like performing brain surgery! I was sweating and had a drink on hand to steady my nerves. I don't know if I'd call it "fun", but I definitely felt a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when I was done and definitely made me appreciate both the figure and designer all that much more. Don't know if I'll be doing it again anytime soon, though! A figure like MP-09 kinda affirms for me that these guys could engineer just about any transform scheme, but they have to simplify or compromise here and there due to budgets (limited parts counts and hinges) and issues of fragility and fiddly-ness.
i've transformed MP05 tons of time, i actually quite like the transformation.. well, except for sliding the spine back and forth, i always need a tool to assist when doing that. the only annoying part of the transformations are the results. the gun doesn't stay pegged in all that well, and we all know the problems with the robot mode. but the transformation itself is definitely fun and REALLY isn't very difficult.
I sold mine a couple of years ago but I do agree with the sentiments on this thread. When I had mine, I try to make it a point to transform MP-5 at least once a mth. I took my time with it & it's quite therapeutic actually. Takes me roughly 20 mins or so to do it. I think it's mostly hyperbole & that in turn influenced people to despise it.
I have yet to come across a Transformer that was difficult to transform. Frustrating, yes with guys like Binaltech Wheeljack and his doors popping off, but not difficult per se. I love the transformation on MP05, its not difficult in the slightest. Involved, but not difficult. Essentially its just an elaborate interpretation of the G1 toy. As for MP09, again essentially easy, and fun. Theres a bit of frustration when you havent learnt exactly the click that something needs to sit at to line up, but its not a toy you need to treat with kid gloves. The only reason i dont really transform MP05 (or Appolyon) isnt percieved fragility or difficulty but that I find their alt modes useless for display. I'd much rather just swap them out for one of the bajillion megatron guns I've aquired over the years.
Hype has never, ever determined any of my purchases in anyway whatsoever on these forums. And such an occurrence could never happen to me because I always transform my figures as that is the whole point of them for me. MP-05 is no where near the supposed terrible and over complicated figure people tend to say it is. Same with MP-09, I actually enjoy his transformation, and even though I don't do it that often I always remember how to...strange!?
Same here. The only figure I've hesitated on is Appolyon. But I had a day to myself a couple weeks ago so I brought all my Megatrons down for a photo shoot. Transformed them all including MP-05 & Appolyon. I've been saying for years that MP-05 is my fav TF (Although MP Soundwave has edged him out now). An involved and somewhat complicated TF with two pretty good modes. A great homage to the G1 toy more so than the toon, I suppose, but not the horrible mess that he's been made out to be.
I haven't transformed him in years. The last time took an hour. Do you guys think MP05 is more challenging or MP09?
The tabs are all gone on mine, after like 200 transformations Lol. I used to really enjoy it. Debated getting another one, maybe later
I never saw what was hard about transforming MP05 beyond "this would be really annoying to do on camera."
I've never had a problem with transforming MP-05 either and never understood the complaints (other than those little tabs hooking the arms to the handle - I can see how someone would break them if they are in a hurry). Knowing they designed him so quickly, I was always impressed how much they tried to fix inherent weaknesses in a gun/robot transformation (attempting to widen legs and arms). And the gun mode looks good. Apollyon, no matter how gorgeous I find his robot mode, I've transformed him to gun mode once.. an insane engineering accomplishment, and I managed to get him back to robot mode, but I'm not sure if I'll transform him again... You have to be careful and it's just too time consuming. I saw someone mention MP-09 Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime. I love this toy and although Hot Rod may be a little big if we want to scale him to the Autobot Cars, he's still a star on my MP shelf, especially now that we have Ultra Magnus. But even after all these years, and all the times I've transformed him, I feel I'm still learning things not made clear in the instructions that get his car mode more and more perfect (I didn't even realize until recently the arms clip into the L-shape tabs under his car roof).
I think MP-5 is much harder. Once you know where and how everything is supposed to go on Rodimus, he's not that hard. The last time I transformed my MP-5 before selling him, it was literally raining broken tiny tabs. And I had been transforming him frequently for the 6 years or so I had him. It's the hip transformation, mainly, although the rest of him isn't exactly a peach either.
Sold mine a few years ago(along with everything pre-MP-10) and I remember having it in gun mode untouched for years, so when I sold it I had to transform it back to robot mode and put it back in the box. It definitely tested my patience and in the process I broke a section of the hip piece. Needless to say it was very frustrating and was glad to get rid of it. I notified the buyer and he was okay with it probably because I was selling it at a bargain price.
I never thought the transformation was that hard. I just think it looks spindly in robot mode and incomplete in gun mode, which doesn't make it feel like a masterpiece at all. Still, for the time, it was exciting to finally get a new gun Megatron.
i transformed him once...well, maybe twice. gun's too big, feels like a desert eagle, not a p38. and mp09 was so fiddly I didn't want to transform him again. both took too long for the results. I was more afraid of breaking mp roddy than megs. -
I don't have it, but I have watched the YouTube videos. You just need patience and care. I regret not buying him when I had the opportunity
I have a pal who gave me his mp5 for my birthday! I haven't transformed (converted) him yet, as he is too new for me to break yet. Ha
