Doing an essay on the Transformers brand for my WR121 class, focusing on the relation between toy and media. One bit of info that could be quite helpful is seeing how the sales have varied in years with or without movies, and with or without cartoons. I vaguely remember seeing something like that once, from a convention or a quarterly report. Does anyone know where I could find that? Thank you.

This is what Ive been able to compile from research, please keep in mind the numbers are NOT adjusted for inflation and are actual dollar amount (or real). I know the absolute best year was 1985, with 2009 being a close second (ROTF).

    1984: $100 million
    1985: $333 million ($684 mill. in 2011 dollars)
    1986: $214 million
    1987:
    1988:
    1989:
    1990: $35 million

    G1 total: $950 million

    1992:
    1993:
    1994:

    1995:
    1996:
    1997:
    1998:
    1999:

    2000:
    2001:
    2002:
    2003:
    2004:
    2005:
    2006:
    2007: $430 million
    2008: $300-$330 million (estimate)
2009: $592 million (may incl. licensing rev)

    2011: $483 million

That is great info, where did you get this from? I would imagine Hasbro's annual reports may have some of the info, news articles about Transformers toys may also quote some of these figures. It would be great to be able to see the sources if they are still available. And as an aside, those 1985 numbers - WOW!!! Not surprising, but still very impressive nonetheless, particularly when adjusted for inflation!

While that's really great info, do you have any sources? Not that I doubt you, it's just that I don't think I should have that important of unsourced info on a college essay.

It depends, some from newspaper articles, some annual reports. They are reliable. Its interesting is that during the 90's., Hasbro didn't mention Transformers figures during G2 nor the Beast Wars years.

For instance, some of the numbers, I got here:

COMPANY NEWS - Hasbro Toy Review - NYTimes.com

Also, I have a 1985 internal Hasbro memo that projected revenue and profits from all toylines. The actual sales figure exceeded the projected. It contained case breakdowns, prices, volumes etc.

During the Beast Wars Era, Hasbro "outsourced" transformers to Kenner, Thats why, Also from 1995 to 2000 Kenner ran ALL Hasbro Boy's toys before the merger in 2000.

Thus you could say Kenner saved the Transformers Brand with the Beast Wars Toys.

Doesnt matter, Hasbro owned Kenner. Also, other Kenner lines were readily reported like the potf Star Wars during that time. I think BW numbers were too tiny and not worthy of much mention (<$75 mill).
