My dad (we'll call him a normal) told me today that Hasbro just makes Transformers and other toys for the money and scoffed when i told him they care for the fans. What say you all about this? What should I say?

Yes, they're in it for the money....but.... just like any business, they do of course need to make sure they satisfy customers.

    You can tell him that.

Hasbro care about the fans as long as the fans pay with their money.

Well, yes, at the end of the day, all the Hasbro, the company, cares about is producing product that people will give them money for. They don't make Transformers for the sake of art.

That doesn't mean, though, that the individual people making Transformers don't care about the brand and want to make cool stuff that fans will enjoy.

How can there be any doubt that they care for us when they have such a brilliantly run fan clu...ermm...I mean, with the tremendous effort they put in to cater to the fans with classics after just 23 yea....I mean, when they reach out to us and ask us what figure we want them to make...well, ok not character - but we did get to choose color! In your face, haters - they care!!!

PS, this message may contain a slight hint of sarcasm.

Of course not. Every one there works for free, everyone who owns stock in the company always refuse dividends, and the president keeps a framed picture of each of us on his wall.

Sorry if it's disillusioning for you, but that's the way the world works. Their accountants, engineers, other employees and stockholders have children to feed, mortgages to pay and their own lives to spend on. The money comes first.

Though, for many of them, they probably do get some satisfaction in making toys people like.

Are you like 13? Don't ask why I'm asking, it just makes sense after such a naive question.

Yes, Hasbro is in it for the money. They constantly push forward with new cuts on materials yet the price steadily creeps upward.

As long as something is profitable, hasbro will put it out.

This doesn't mean that the people working for hasbro [various designers etc] aren't fans and take pride in what they are doing, but hasbro is, 100% in it for the money.

yes they're in it for the money, but they do also care about fans/collectors.

    two figures for evidence:

Black Shadow and Straxus, errr, "Darkmount." odd, niche characters only "serious" fans know about. not to say that kids wouldn't enjoy them too, but when a kid goes into the TF aisle he's probably not looking for a character from a few issues of the marvel comic, or a japanese-exclusive.

less popular MP's too (Thundercracker, Skywarp, Acid Storm, Sun Storm, Prowl).

Yes. Corporations are in it for the money. They only care when people stop buying their products.

Is a multi-billion dollar publicly traded goliath corporation with stocks, shareholders and boards of directors with decade's long market domination, global licensing partnerships, film & television production and every iota of what they do protected under air tight trademarking, and in many cases also patenting, "just in it for the money"? THAT'S the question? Really? Reeeeally?

    Haha... wow.

The corporate face yes all they care about is they have a hot brand that brings dump truck loads of money to their gold plated mansions. While said brand is hot then yes the corporation will pay attention to the fans, but only to make sure they can keep the dump trucks full of money rolling for as long as possible. Once the brand proves to be unprofitable (hi GI Joe), the show's over.

Most companies exist to make money for one reason or another.

If you want products that come from fans of the toys themselves, then maybe you need to look at the various third party offerings.
