So, I think it's no secret that Soundwave is one of those guys that's had a rough time finding a satisfying modern-day alt-mode. What with cassette players being entirely unknown to today's youth.

But here's an idea for him that I can't recall ever hearing before: Make his alt-mode a DS style clamshell game system. When folded up, he'll have a nice, boxy alt-mode that we like Soundwave to have.

I can think of many ways that this could work on a transformation level, and hell, you could even have either of the game screens end up on his chest to give him that iconic Soundwave look.

It's modern, it's role-play, and hell, you could even have a gimmick where his minions are game carts.

What do you guys think? Could it work, or am I deluding myself here?

 

The transformation would be very memorable. This is a good idea.

 

How about a News Truck or Van?

 

I think most people have accepted Soundwave NOT having his original alt mode anymore. I'd love a classics toy that uses the unused All Hail Megatron design (the one BTS made Sonicron from), but I think most people have accepted him being something like a car or van as long as his robot head is correct, has a shoulder cannon, and has a window chest that opens, and he pops out little minions...

An NSA-type spy truck, like a dark blue or black Chevy Tahoe. The rear hatch could hold minions. I find it hard to believe that Hasbro hasn't done this yet.

 

i think the reason that wouldn't work for soundwave is because he's an important iconic character, his alt mode needs to work in with that concept.

now.. maybe for an updated classics/generations figure that would work, but for a new show or a movie or something, i'd say absolutely not.

 

Cassette player forever! Hell, I still listen to my cassettes, even went to a hair rock concert a couple of week ago where people pulled out PROPER cigarette lighters for the power ballads. Made me feel all warm inside. Ya know, I might be getting old. Okay, I see your point.

A DS doesn't really have anything to do with communications. I say just have him as an SUV or helicopter.

I thought the predator drone from the Prime series was a great idea but unfortunately it doesn't lend well to his classic robot mode. A high tech communications van or SUV alt mode probably makes the most sense.

What about the minions though, any ideas there?

 

A simple one would be one of those News or FBI vans with a folding satellite on the roof. As an added bonus you could have the satellite detach from the van's roof and become Laserbeak, Buzzsaw or Ratbat.

Have there been any appearances of Soundwave's "new" alt mode in the IDW books? I've seen pics of the bot mode which looks alright but I don't get the IDW singles unless they are packaged with a toy.

I could see Soundwave as a cargo plane. Refitted with a comm dish, the kind the military uses as mobile command stations. And the cassettes can be reimagined either as drone units or weapon/supply drops. Work out the transformation so that the plane's cargo door winds up in the chest

 

Keep him a cassette deck if only for stupid kids of today to have to learn a little about history. Why is it always things of the past are a giant no no in terms of kids having no clue what they are but it is totally fine having futuristic or cybertronian alt modes? Kids should have no idea what those are since they can't see those in the real world. Records and 8-tracks were no longer the common media when I was a kid but I knew what they were. I know when I have kids, I will purposely teach them at least what old tech is so they don't look like morons what most kids today apparently are.

 

But then he'd be Lightwave, and not Sound wave.

I like the DS idea, but I could go for the news truck as well.
