i guess you never watched the show.

they're trying to be as accurate to the show.. bumblebee WAS depicted very small in the show.

so.. they're basing their size on the show, and the licensed vehicles are accurate to the real world vehicles but are scaled to fit their size from the show.

and, yes, for an expensive high end line, i want it to be accurate to the show. i sure as shit don't want a masterpiece bumblebee that is as tall as sideswipe.

yeah, it works because, though that scale chart might be off a little bit, it's still close enough.. especially considering the bots in the show weren't always depicted as being the same height all the time. so, this chart is just about average for all of them.. so, they should base these figures off of the chart.

go back and watch the show.. all of the masterpiece figures starting with MP10 are roughly in scale with each other, which was the goal with MP10.

i could understand bringing this argument up if the size difference between MP magnus and MP10 was the same as G1 magnus and G1 prime.. but it's not.

takara REALLY nailed the scale with MP bumblebee.. he's the perfect height, and making him that small makes his vehicle mode smaller which in turn fits in better when you're looking at a collection of G1 cartoon characters, not scale model cars.

TakaraTomy uses it as a guide of sorts. I don't think it's as rigid as what's being made out here, and especially as strictly as some fans are going by it. Also, Hasui-san has said that the designs are based on the cartoons and the toys.

Of all the things to fanrage about, this and Masterpiece buttflaps just aren't them.

"Don't cry because it's not perfect, smile because there's awesome toys."

I'm not scale OCD, but I do admit that in the 80's I was always annoyed that the same type of vehicle were different scales in toys (Breakdown and Sideswipe who were both a countach but Sideswipe was much bigger while a Seeker and Air Raid are both F15's, but Skywarp dwarfed Air Raid). My absolute preference would be a line where they pick a scale for each altmode and all should abide by it: e.g. 1:1 for user objects, 1:24 for cars, 1:28 for trucks, 1:35 for tanks and 1:48 for jets.

But that is not how it was in the old G1 cartoon, and the MP series (apparently) strives to give us the cartoon in toys, with details filled in by the toys and the real life vehicles. This also means the scale of those robots in the same cartoon. And in that cartoon some robots were big and some were small, but not always according to their altmode.

Take your example of Bumblebee. If they made Bumblebee's altmode the same scale as the Countach or Datsun brothers (i.e. 1:29ish), then considering his transformation he'd be at least the same size as Sunstreaker, and probably bigger. I think he would end up being one of the biggest Autobot car robots. Same works for Brawn. In many ways the cartoon was influenced by the original toys: small toys were small robots on the cartoon.

So, does it make sense that Bumblebee in robotmode is only slightly bigger than a human, while in altmode he can house four humans? No, absolutely not. It's ridiculous and something that would annoy me in every TF line.

But it is how it was on the cartoon. And the sizes of the cartoon were based on this scalechart that was drawn in an era when all art was by hand. No, it's not perfect; no, it doesn't make sense from a real world perspective. But this is how it was in the cartoon (animation errors not withstanding) and thus this is how it is in the MP line.

If that troubles you, there used to be this beautiful line called Alternators/Binaltech. All robots turn into 1:24 scale cars, meaning windcharger (who was small in the cartoon) now is the same size as Blaster or Optimus Prime.

My thoughts exactly. I'm glad they're establishing a standard, it doesn't have to be 100% all the time, but like others have said, it always bugged me back in the 80's that figures varied so wildly. I'm into MPs not just becauase they are clearly awesome individually, but also for how awesome they are collectively. I probably would have lost interest with the line if they were all over the place.

.I like the scale chart. Respect to the person who developed it.

Is it really ocd to want my robots to scale and do some people really hate me for that?

I laugh at the total anal scale guys in the fandom. It reminds me of the Trek nerds who argue over the warp capabilities of starships because we all know its real right?????

Not used that for a while....normality resumed.

Yeah. That's exactly what it's like. Obviously.

I do wonder why ppl get so upset over someone else's preferences. I'm sure there is a discussion in itself there.

Yeah, I'm cool with Grimlock's size and Ultra Magnus. Not saying I wouldn't love a giant Grimlock, but he was often drawn standard "leader" size in bot mode so I'm happy to live with the figure we've got.

I don't get fans who get hung up on one little thing about a figure that didn't meet their expectations and it totally destroys the whole thing for them. Gotta look at the big picture. Most of us couldn't have even imagined these things more than five, ten, fifteen years ago, let alone thirty. That they exist at all boggles my mind. Life is good.

Basing it on that... sure... basing... as in a base... as in a starting point with refinements and adjustments from there. Who says one of their first steps wasn't making a higher quality, accurate, digital chart?

There is a exo-suit-less Spike in the MP line...included with MP10. Now, MP Bumblebee has not been released yet, buuuuuut.... I feel pretty confident in believing this feet will go higher than that Spike's mid-shin.

This is very true. The MP line as it exists now is not something I never thought would happen. Those of us that rejoice in these great figures are lucky indeed.
That old scale chart is being taken a bit out of context, it wasn't created to be a reference for the MP line, and when used as such it has it's flaws and limitations. But it's better than nothing.

But reading between the rants of the original poster's lines, I can see that it would be nice to have an updated version of this chart, maybe a "HD" version or something?

I'd love to see a line from Hasbro or a third party that picked a scale and stuck with it. No giant mini-cars and tiny space shuttles.

Sadly, Hasbro will continue to make giant Bumblebees, and Deluxe motorcycles and Deluxe jets in the same line.

    Sounds Awesome!

    ...in theory

...until you actually start thinking about the reality of it and to truly be in scale the line would have either cars or aircraft, not both. The scale between them is such a huge gap. A deluxe class car would mean an F-15 would have to be Titan class or larger. I think MP Starscream is *close* to in actual scale to only cars like the G2 Go-bots/RID spychangers.

I would like to think takara does have a redone scale chart that they are using to base these new MP's off of, instead of that travesty from the 80's...

    That's what I'd like to think :)
Hopefully they do internally and fans just aren't privy to that information....yet.

I think the reason people like to use the scale chart as reference is because it is just copying and pasting of the character models, which gives a standard scale to the robot modes. Even with scale issues in the cartoon, going by the character models seems the most accurate way to tell what the scale is supposed to be.
