The same thing happened with my Siege Prime. Just take that Megatron with you to the counter. Much easier that way.

    Edit: Wrote springer meant Prime.

Too late. I took the lone figure to the register, and it was snatched away and taken to customer service.

Really? I thought when it happened to me it was just an overzealous worker. Wow, Target really must hate their customers. If it's on the shelf, it should be sold.

Whats most infuriating about the street date is they eventually get put back on the shelves. I had a target with a siege prime that they snatched away. Couple weeks later? There were TWO of them on the shelves.

    TWO.

You know, Target has been pretty useless for me in 2019. Short Pump Target in particular has been a total joke.

If there is another figure of the same size class that is older I would just scan it and bag the new one leaving the old one behind. I have little patience for that kind of crap in a Target.

    Lmao neeral has me blocked

Isnt it theft to swipe one figure and take the other though ? I mean, ill do it, i dont care, but we should be careful about telling others to do it. It is technically theft.

Not really, you're paying for the figure, just not the one you scanned. As long as the price is the same no harm no foul.

Especially when Target's system is wrong. Toys don't have "street dates" the way that CDs and movies do. The one exception is when an entire toyline launches at once (typically a movie line, Star Wars, big TF movies, etc).

Explaining that to a Target cashier wont' win, as they'll trust the computer over you.

To avoid looking weird you can always scan Megatron, put Springer in the bag, scan Megs again, put him in the bag, then pay for both and return Megs later. That way they're less likely to notice.

I was a Loss Prevention Supervisor at Best Buy in the early 00's. CD's and DVD's would usually arrive a week or two before the street date. We had an employee who would buy already released CD's and DVD's that were the same price, but take the not yet released ones. About $200 total. It was for his personal use and he genuinely did not understand the problem. He was fired, and charged with misdemeanor theft.

Its not about breaking street dates or if there should be a street date. Paying for one item, but leaving with another causes overages and shortages in the inventory systems, "shrink". Overages are just as bad as shortages and stores are penalized for it. I don't think you would get arrested if you were caught, but the store security would probably give you a hard time and maybe ban you. I don't think pointing out that their system is wrong would help your case.

Except that Target literally uses the same stock number for every toy in its size class (for TFs). So there is no inventory discrepancy.

That said, doing what I said above is still bending the rules and they may boot you for it (if they notice)

I agree with you and that was the point I was trying to make. Scanning one thing and leaving with another is viewed as theft from store LP/Security, so bending rules might get you unwanted attention. I don't know exactly how Target's inventory system works but there must be something in the system differentiating the UPC's and then lumping them into their DPCI codes. If they were all the same code there wouldn't be a problem buying some and not others. You are probably right though. When they take inventory they are probably counted under the same code so there would not be a discrepancy.

I have experience being on the LP/Security side and I was trying to save you guys from getting unwanted harassment. Sorry if I was sounding like the "know it all" guy. I apologize for getting off topic and if anyone felt like I called them out or attacked them I am sorry.

Uh... Did not know this. I am patient. I can wait a few weeks to get a figure. Not worth getting banned from a store or, worse, arrested.

NOT JUDGING those of you who do feel like doing that, though. You do you.

I've worked retail, but I never worked in regular retail. I worked at Depot and Lowes years ago, so this stuff never happened to me. That said, they really did drill into our heads that shrink is one of the worst things that can negatively impact a store. I guess I just never saw scanning one figure that's the same price and taking the other one with me as the same thing as theft. It is absolutely shrink, though.

I won't be doing it anymore. I am too old to get the boot from a store because I don't have a little patience.

I just checked and I have not blocked you. If it says that then there is an issue with the thread. There is only one person I have blocked and it is not you.

I feel conflicted about this, because (as some of you have said) it IS a sort of technical theft, from a LP perspective... but also I've had actual cashiers themselves pull this trick when a new item doesn't ring up properly. Or occasionally they'll just ask me how much the price on the shelf tag was, and key it in manually (although that's usually for stuff that's small/cheap, like less than $15). I'm guessing if they got caught they'd be in trouble, but I've encountered it pretty often.

I'm not endorsing the practice, mind you.

In the state of virginia, if an item is put in a public place of sale; like a shelf, peg hook, or the like then it is legally available to be purchased. Street dates have ZERO bearing on this. If the retail entity (in this case Target) puts an item they have contracted to be "street dated" out for sale then they are liable for the mistake and not the consumer. Target cannot legally prevent you from buying the item. If the register cannot ring the item properly then they have to do an override. I worked retail (long ago) and Target unfortunately was one of them. Nothing policy wise has changed since then. The thing Target is trying to prevent is the fine (and it can be quite large) for selling the street dated item early in violation of their contract, in this case Hasbro. But once again it is Target's problem and not the consumer's. I have called them out on this multiple times, almost every time the employee or manager lies to my face and I put them on with either their district or regional manager (I know them both very well / they get feedback on their stores from me) and they get a "education" on how to handle the situation then and in the future. Walmart rarely ever has this issue; they just ring it up and accept they made a mistake.

And the other thing to remember is that toys don't actually have street dates (except when a whole line launches, as I stated above). So there is no reason at all for them to not sell it to you
