I'm going to be in Chicago for 3 nights starting tonight. Any recommendations on toy shops downtown near the mile, etc... where to look? Anything vintage or new is fine, just want to see some TF's.

Nothing interesting toy-wise near The Mile, unfortunately.

A bit south of the river is a Target, but it's an urban Target, with a toy selection that is inferior to a regular Target.

I need some opinions on the Wii U from somebody that already has it. What's some good games, and what accessories are a must to have.

Do you already have the system or are considering it?
I don't want to try to persuade you to get one, but if you've already decided on it, I can help ya out. Had mine since launch.

not at all. just a lot of people who haven't experienced it seem to have very strong feelings against it, and I don't feel like arguing that when they've already made up their minds.

pick up nsmbu as a must. best in the series imo since mario world.
make sure you have some extra wii remotes if kids/family are playing. it can support up to 5 I think...4 on remotes and the 5th player on the pad. highest recommendation as for games atm.

if you got the 32 gb system, you got nintendoland too, which is great. if you got 8gb you might want to consider it. it is a party game, but the minigames are excellent. lots of variety and replay value here.

zombi u if you are into survival. completely ignore the mainstream reviews on it. they are trying to compare to action/fps games ala cod zombie modes and resident evil. it's neither. completely original experience you really have to check out first hand to get what it is.

as for accessories it depends on what model you bought. 32 will come with a charge cradle and a few extras for the gamepad. not really necessary. probably would want to get some screen protectors for the pad though since it is touch screen and can be scratched.

if you have the option of a wired connection, I'd highly recommend the wii usb ethernet adapter as well. if you already have one from the wii, it will work with the wii u as well. reported DL times for the initial update vary up to about 2-3 hours via the wireless. I was done with using the ethernet adapter in 45 minutes. great option if you have the choice to go wired.

the pro controller is excellent too, but there's not much that utilizes it at the moment. I'd wait on that purchase til there are more games that support it, but it is a rock solid, and very comfortable pad.

you may just want to run that update when you get it, then put it back in the box. that way you're set to go xmas morning. having to run a 2-3 hr update xmas morning while several other families across the US are trying to do the same thing might not be pleasant. the box has no seals on it and all the innards are held with twist ties. you be straight if you updated > repacked. they'd never know :)

Don't have a Wii U yet, but will buy one as soon as Pikmin 3 stops getting delayed and actually hits the shelf. (My wife loves the Pikmin games.)

Is it different than the first NSMB? Because I was seriously disappointed in that one. I thought it was boring and unchallenging. (I only played it single-player though.)

If I have the Wii's Classic controller, can I just use that? Does the Pro offer anything that the Classic doesn't?

Are you talking about the one for wii or ds? I never tried the wii version, but it's drastically different from the ds version. I've only played this single player as well, but found it very rewarding. Even after you are done, there is a lot left to collect to open extra stages. Also they tweaked stuff like the removal of item storage (dunno if wii version had this) to make the game a bit more challenging. It plays veeeeery much like super mario world. If you liked SMW you'll probably love this.

The pro controller is basically a gamepad without the touch screen. It has all the perks and motion sensing built in. Does not need tethering to a wii remote either, it's a standalone wireless device. Lithium-ion for battery just like the gamepad.

I have no idea if they'll continue to support the classic pad. I picked one up so I could play my e-shop and some wii games that play with it (punch out). You can look on the back of wii u games to see what controllers they support, they all have little icons down the back.

Just note though that the WII EMULATOR built into the wii u will not support backwards play with the gamepad/pro controller for wii games. You will still need a remote/nunchuck/classic pad for those.

Whew. I know that's a lot but trying to help :)
I still have a lot to learn too but I can try to answer anything I've found out about.

    Wii.

I played the entire first world and maybe half of the fourth world (via warp). I found the level design to be unchallenging and uninteresting. (I don't remember anything about item storage.)

I did love SMW, but that was like 20 years ago. The Wii game just felt less complex. Of course, I might be comparing it to nostalgia, in which case it will never win.

    Ah, Classic doesn't have motion-sensing.

From what I've read, it sounds like they kinda fucked up the WII support mode. Not that it's horrible, just that it could have been a lot better. It sounds downright idiotic that you can't use the gamepad or pro for Wii games that use the Classic controller. Kind of bummed that you can't use GameCube pads for Wii-mode either, but at least I can see a physical reason for that (the GameCube socket).

If you're not sure about it, I think redbox will be doing wii u rentals, if they aren't already. Drop a couple bucks and see if it's your cup o' tea if/when you get the system. It might not be for everyone, but imo, I think they did a great job with the game.

I agree, but the system is new and they are still cranking out quick updates. I expect something will come along eventually, since it is a pretty big complaint atm. FWIW, they've already had 2 updates/patches in under a month that the system was out, fixing some out of the box problems. As a new owner, I really appreciate that and I hope they continue reviewing feedback and patching accordingly.

Also, even though there isn't any kind of visual upscaling filter, regular wii games look much better running through the upscaled 1080 hdmi cables then you'll ever get out of regular wii a/v or components. It's pretty noticeable for me especially, since one of the reasons I got rid of my wii was because it looked like shit on a hd lcd.
