So when the insecticons were first introduced, they were like really tough. Not even Megatron, who is basically the stronger TF on Earth, was able to take it down easily. But in later episodes, the Autobots are pretty much able to take them down with one shot? Are they suffering from "tough in first episode then weak later episodes" syndrome?

    Pretty much.

Although tomorrow's episode where one partners up with Doc Knock has the potential to change that.

They just followed the typical TV trope of being weaklings when in groups. It happens in every show.

I'm assuming they were only temporarily dumbed-down because there was a huge army of them. With the single Insecticon following Knock Out around, we'll probably be back to seeing their true badass nature.

Bad writing. It actually made some sense for Unicron's rocklings, considering he has to use his psychic will to control them. One was able to put up a fight for Optimus, but when he makes a bunch, they are taken down much easier.

This though? Just bad writing. Especially considering the one Airachnid was controlling was a scout. They really shouldn't have introduced so large an army if they were just going to become insect flavored Vehicons.

A mob is much less intelligent than the individuals that comprise it, even in real life. I can't imagine that's any less true when that mob is under some kind of hypnotic thrall.

The one from Cybertron was a sentry left there to guard. Same with the only active insecticon in the earth hive. They're probably just better overall as individuals.

That and the show trope where things are powerful when first introduced but seem to weaken in time.

I think it was a mistake in either animation or writing.

There's a theory that the Insecticons are all clones. Some where the original Insecticon who I'm going to call Bombshell is feeling all the pain of the other Insecticons getting killed over and over again. This came after seeing how Starscream was suffering from his clones being killed. So the theory is that every time a batch of clones gets killed future clones become weaker. So like the one that was fighting Megatron was a first generation clone made when Bombshell was in his prime no pun intended, while the weaker Insecticons are like 5th generation clones.

Of course this is all just trying to come up with some possible explanation out of very limited information.

I like this theory. I don't think it's crazy it makes sense.

They probably have different mentality when they are grouped as compared to being alone. Individual, realizes that survival is key, and it needs to make sure it does everything possible. As a group, it has to think that it doesn't need to put as much effort, because they feel the numbers game would work. Hence, why they get offed so quickly. I think that is a sound theory.

If i'm not mistaken, Megs is the only one to have engaged an Insecticon in prolonged hand to hand combat, in which case the Insecticon has a clear advantage.

The Autobots packed the Eradicating Aerosol magic card in their deck for just this kind of occasion.
