Is this show and toy line doomed before it began?

I noticed this too. On sites like YouTube, DeviantArt, and Tumblr, TFP is very popular, (maybe even the most popular version, I see more TFP than anything) but here it seems like a lot of people knock it.

I kinda wonder if it's one of those things people claim is bad just because it's very popular and well liked outside of the fandom. Kind of like how some people criticize Frozen for being "overrated" when they're probably just tired of hearing "Let It Go". TVTropes even has an article for this kind of hate: Main/It's Popular, Now It Sucks - Television Tropes & Idioms

    Hive/mob mind? :p

There are programs, but not one that would work within the scope of tfw2005 forum.

    Echo chamber?

I stand corrected -- as I misspoke. One that works within a forum environment is the missing link.

There are several web platforms available to do very complex polls. None of the free hosted sites is up to the job -- and I'm not interested enough in the data to start making outlays.

I am most curious as to what the demographics for RiD are going to be. I am however, fairly safe in predicting that it will not live up to the apparently dominant 18-29 year old block's expectations!

    Ha! Echo Chamber

I am sure it won't. I wouldn't waste your time on the research, it is not like you are contributing to a knowledge base or being financed by any vested party on the subject matter such as Hasbro.

Although if Hasbro wanted to get a qualitatively accurate gauge of the hardcore fandom and its sense of diversity, doing a qualitative study of all the major Transformers fan websites (allspark, Seibertron, tformers, tfw2005, etc.) may come in handy, of course Hasbro would have to decide if the effort would be worth it.

On Topic: it is WAY to early to tell if RID is going to be successful or not, there is far too many variables to assess. It depends on how it gets marketed, whether it is popular with the target audience, if it is cost effective, the popularity of its direct competition, and many other factors.

Of course, and that's a wise analysis. I'm just saying, on this site, there's no mistaking that the forum's general opinion on Prime took a big nosedive over time as it got worse.

I still am interested to know why everywhere else, this show didn't receive the same reputation the show has here?

    Oh yeah!

That's why I'd *never* start a thread on the subject (vs. age) and wouldn't trust a single stage pole (single show up/down vs. age) either. Flamed and swamped, respectively

Sometimes it really is just an echo chamber. If there's a single really dominant poster, given more leeway by the moderators than most, that alone could do it. I'm not saying that is or is not the case here, but I've seen it before, I'm sure I'll see it again.

Further, with the echo chamber effect, if you're a TFP fan, would you really want to post here? There's a feeding frenzy effect no matter *how* good the mods are. The same thing is true at a forum full of 'shippers for a given show: fans of plot over character aren't going to last long.

I'm not that rabid a fan of any of the shows, but I can handle myself with the TFP-bashers. I also saw some weakness in Season 3 especially which was rushed and clearly driven by toy promotion. I also got a bit tired of the MacGuffin of the week plotline in Season 2. They were in desperate need of strong beta plots well before they got to the Predacons. While I understand the near prohibitive expense, a few more recurring guest characters (maybe two on each side for a total of four) could have done a lot for Season 2 (and given them more toy promotions in the process).

That said, overall, I give the show exceedingly high marks: B+ or maybe even A- (I need to give it a while for perspective).

The forum favorite, Beast Wars, also provided a tired format of this or that (toy-sale driven) upgrade, combining the worst of the error of TFP Season 3 toy-promotion with a repetitive staleness equal to that of the TFP MacGuffin search. The headache causing primitive CGI didn't endear it to me either. I've had plenty of perspective on it. After some Beast Wars fans talked me into a rewatch, I've upped the grade to B- (I gave it a C- before that). I'm still mixed about Beast Wars -- so I need to give it a bit more perspective.

    *sigh*

All this just gives me a headache.

Couldn't we just put it in syndication and be done with it? Worked well enough in 1985!
(what DO they have on after school on broadcast TV these days? I don't live where I used to live so the channels here are different from when I was a kid but it seems like it's all Judge Judy, Divorce Court, Shocking Videos and Jerry Springer)

Give me ONE channel for a year, here's my line up:

    5:am Muppet Babies/Pocoyo
    6:am Pokemon/Battle of the Planets
    7:am GI:Joe/Transformers (G1)
    8:am Transformers Animated/Mighty Orbots
    9:am Mythbusters
    10:am Knight Rider
    11:am A-Team
    12: noon Airwolf
1: pm Tales of the Gold Monkey & Riptide (alternating days)
    2: pm Magnum PI
    3: pm Smurfs/Jem
    4: pm Galaxy Rangers/Thundercats
    5: pm Battlestar Galactica (1978)
    6: pm Buck Rodgers
    7: pm Star Trek (TOS/TNG/DS9)

I'd give prime time to the networks and the overnight to the infomercials!

    Who want's some?

    You nailed it.

Worked well enough for G1, worked well for Batman the Animated Series (birthing the last working superhero continuity, the Bruce Timm Animated Universe), worked well for He-Man for crying out loud (though I never watched a show).

Kids have short(er) attention spans, and given the chance they'll watch the whole series more than once. I suspect I'm not the only one who observed kids doing so. To my mind, THAT'S how you sell toys.

Cartoons in Syndication is dead. They don't have saturday morning cartoon blocks on the major networks.

I'm sure Hasbro would have considered it if it was an option.

Mostly news and daytime TV now. The fact is that most children have moved away from TV as their primary source unless it's streaming or on a dedicated children's network. Dedicated networks are the only way to go now but that only leaves a handfull of networks.

They shoot for syndication but it has little meaning at this point because most stations now either only want to air their own long-running shows or the next newest thing they can market the toys for. So basically unless Transformers aims at really little children (Rescue Bots) where its audience is constantly renewable or goes for being VERY ambitious the new shows are likely to become shorter and shorter.

After watching three episodes of this show, I can tell that it can survive, all it needs is a better time slot then 6:30 in the MORNING.

^ It annoys me too, but Sonic Boom's been in that slot for a while now and has just earned itself a second season. Evidently, it works for the kids, and they're ultimately the ones keeping our Transformers shows alive. I can always just use my phone and/or tablet to set an alarm or something...
