They could be Cybertronians who started as a single entity, and while trying to figure out combiners, ends up giving them Mitotic sparks. Ta-da! Duocons, Magmatron and/or Sky Lynx (if adding beasts into the mix; Dinobots and Insecticons could be early attempts at forcing beast alt-forms), and all that fun stuff!

Do we even know if Shockwave will appear physically in the show, or just through flashbacks? I haven't seen those clips so I don't know.
