There were several opportunities to develop Prime that the writers missed; at this point, I'm thinking that it would be best to scrap hm and rewrite him. I'd start by getting rid of his entire speech pattern and replace it with something like Optimus Primal in Season Two, where he was tenser and not as laid-back as in Season One. I'd also completely eliminate his initial refusal to kill Megatron - his development in that area came way, way too late, contradicting Darkness Rising. If he was more like he was in Darkness Rising, where he shot after a retreating Megatron, pulled a con on him, and fought to kill, then he'd be much better. Now, what I would add would be actually have him interact with the others beyond a lecturer sense. He could be a father figure to the kids, giving Jack someone to pattern himself after, giving Raf someone who would be the kind of father that kids need when they are younger, and giving Miko some desperately needed guidance. On top of that they should keep his "no personal life" aspect, which is honestly, the angle that should be emphasized, not his robo-Jesus aspect. People on this thread and others have gone into detail about the hard life he's had. The writers should explore that past, show how he developed into the man he became, and the reason he decided to bury his personal life and most of his emotions - to save himself further pain. Future development would have him be confronted with this decision, forcing him to choose between going the way he has always gone and not getting hurt, but never enjoying life, and choosing to live life instead of just existing, with all of its joy and sorrow. It's such a tragedy that the writers have so much potential with this Optimus, yet they routinely waste it. |
