Our latest Transformers Generations toy gallery is now online! Available for your enjoyment today is a look at Transformers Generations Autobot Whirl, who has just started to arrive at US retail.

Autobot Whirl is a great release in the Voyager class. He is a very Generation 1-faithful update complete with stickers to reproduce all the Generation 1 stickered details, but if you dislike stickers, he looks perfectly good without them.

Articulation is good, Whirl has some excellent movement in his shoulders and elbows. His hips and knees also boast some good articulation but take note that the upper hinge on the silver part of the legs is extremely stiff out of the box.

Those who dislike the Movie aesthetic might be disappointed to see that Whirl has “chicken legs”, though they suit the design and are accurate to the More than Meets the Eye comic. Also accurate to the comic is the head design, which is a very pleasing touch.

Whirl comes with a small arsenal of weapons including two missile pods, triple barreled machine gun and a Nul-Ray cannon. Each weapon has a selection of posts and C-clip connectors, allowing you to attach them to Whirl’s different modes and arrange his weapons loadout however you desire.

Overall Whirl is a nice, fun toy. He has three modes to transform into, including an intermediate “heliped” mode, which itself can be arranged with the robot arms deployed or folded away. The helicopter cockpit opens as well, in another nice tough. He’s out now at retail, and well deserving of a purchase, especially for those who are fans of the More than Meets the Eye comic book where Whirl has a starring role. Take a look at the gallery, linked below, to see for yourself.

Not a fan. It's too much of a reproduction of the original with modern engineering, and the chicken legs/head aren't enough of a consolation for not being the MTMTE design.

Apparently this guy was designed by someone from the GI Joe team, which seems like a weird decision.

I kinda dislike that it's not a MTMTE design either. I mean, people are crying out for him because of MTMTE, and . . . they re-make his G1 toy instead? What?

That said, I'll probably try to get him. I was fan of him before Roberts' turned him into a fantastic character, he seems well articulated, and most important, I'm a sucker for any Transformer who comes with lots and lots of guns.

I agree that its far from a perfect IDW interpretation of Whirl. As for it being designed by a member of the Joe team...can't say how plausible that is or is not...

I'm thinking that this was in development and on the drawing boards WWwaaayy back when most of us were complaining that generations characters were becoming far to divergent in their design esthetic.

Love it or hate it, it's an excellent gallery we have here! Wish the OP showed how you could flip the chain gun around and underslung it beneath Whirls arm to form a weapon plug right where his hand is! It appears to be a total Easter Egg! You can use it to help Whirl use a sword just like in the end of MTMTE.

I believe that it was ether featured in Boltmatrix or Kuma Style review video.

I am so tired of hearing 'but in eyedeedubyah...'. This Whirl is great. BBTS sold out in a day or two. Hasbro Toyshop has sold out in just a few hours each time he shows up in stock. So it seems like the transformer collectors like him.

Why do people want a toy representation of the only time Whirl was actually a compelling and interesting character that made him likeable and sought after!? Why don't they care for the generic G1 block that never did anything?! You should all worship my old G1! Whaaaaaaaa!

Yes why have him have a unique and memorable look, instead of just giving him two giant rectangles. That's much more visually interesting and totally not generic looking/sarcasm

because he's Whirl, he already has a completely unique and memorable look ~ he's a bright blue one-eye'd claw-handed helicoptery psychopath ~ shoe horning reverse articulating legs into a Classics figure just doesn't make any sense to me. (and it's one of my least favorite things about so many of the movie designs)

Least they could have done is set up that joint so it could have gone either way. (standard or reverse)

I don't think the legs are bird-like enough! They're basically regular human-like legs bent backwards with a tiiiiiiiiiny little stick between the thigh and shin. The three parts of the leg really ought to be closer in length with each other.

I just opened this figure today, and I love him. I actually love the bird legs, they're almost my favorite thing about the figure. :p  It seems to suit an airborne character, and makes him just that much weirder next to the other Classics.

But Artiepants, you can easily swivel his legs around for a more traditional look. They were clearly designed to work either way and have both kinds of legs as an option, no doubt for repaint purposes; I would bet money that Whirl's repaint, whoever that is, will use the biped leg transformation. In Whirl's case, using that option he ends up with skinny feet... but that more or less works since it evokes the skis his G1 figure had.

Anyway, this figure also just feels like a return to form in terms of quality. He feels solid sand well-engineered, more so than the recent run of thin, hollow, cheapy-feeling figures. His opening cockpit is awesome, and makes him feel like a higher-end toy than he actually is.

My only complaint is that his shoulder joints are a little weak, so that when you load him down with weapons his arms sag (and I could see them becoming loose over time). But other than that, just a nice, fun figure.

Very nice gallery! I had to reference it to figure out where a couple of the weapons attached, thanks! :)

Here is a pic of the legs reversed for those that don't like the "chicken leg" look.

Not the original source I pulled the idea from (I did pull it from one of our YouTube reviewers), BUT that's exactly what I meant.

I wish that this shot was more thoroughly passed around these boards. It's a way-killer idea and it does get us closer to MTMTE.

I for one am glad it's not the MTMTE design. Nice to get an Updated G1 design again.

Even though it looks like a nice figure, I would have never had had any desire to buy this had I not happened to read the comics packaged in with the several Generations deluxes I've bought recently. Well-played Hasbro.... well-played. Very nice gallery though. It definitely sealed my decision. Looking forward to finding him now.

Whril is my favorite voyager of the "thrilling thirty" line. He got alot of personality and blends in the IDW Whirl aesthetics in a way that not mish mashed. But his knees are scary tight and I dislike that propeller doesn't lock in robot mode. Besides that there not anything wrong with him
