Rounding out our look at the Generations Deluxe IDW Comics Wave 3 is a look at Skids! Skids is a talented Autobot - a theoretician by training, he is also an "outlier", an Autobot with an unusual talent, which in his case is the ability to learn at an exceptional speed. He was picked up by the crew of the Lost Light suffering from memory loss and joined their quest to search for the Knights of Cybertron. As such he is a very special toy, because not only is he the last of the 1984 and 1985 cars to get a Classics update, but he is also a member of the Lost Light crew, which are always welcome releases.

Skids is a really fun toy. He is not flawless, because he does have a bit of limited movement in his shoulders and his backpack does sometimes make him a little tricky to balance. But he also has a very sharp look, strongly conveying both the concept of an updated version of Generation 1 Skids and also capturing the feel of the character from the comic. He also has an absolute mountain of weaponry, including two double-barreled shoulder cannons, two shoulder mounted banks of missiles, 8 missiles per shoulder, twin lasers in each arm which swing out to either side of the wrist, plus liquid nitrogen rifle and the nudge gun. The latter two weapons can combine into a larger weapon. Almost all these weapons can tuck away as well, so Skids can be displayed in a nice variety of configurations.

All in all, Skids is a good release, and a lot of fun. He is very much the spirit of a Classics update of the original toy, and the sheer amount of guns makes for lots of posing options. If the shoulders had a little more freedom to move, he'd probably be perfect. Even so, with his wave now hitting US retail, I cannot recommend this one enough. He's worth hunting down and adding to your collection. Check out the gallery at the link below and see for yourself.

Also by way of a PSA - a lot of people have reported that the hips are installed backwards on Skids out of the package. It's easy to change, and it improves the movement of the hips tremendously. Just be careful on the balls of the ball jointed hips, as I've heard of a couple of breakages on those.

A big shout out also to my good friend Shockscream, who hooked me up with a right hip after my own Skids came with two left hips.

Looks really sweet, glad to see my favorite Diaclone-era character getting some love. I think if Reprolabels does a set for him, it may be my first ever purchase from them. Seeing the vehicle mode from several angles really makes it easier to see how he's "descended" from the original in that mode; the Hasbro stock photos were from an angle that made it harder to tell.

My only real complaint is that the wrist blasters don't really look like they add that much, and there's no real place to hold them that wouldn't screw with the use of his hands "in reality." He's got plenty of guns without.

Looks awesome! As with Hound, Sunstreaker, Red Alert and Smokescreen I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for Takara's version - I imagine Skids will be in a darker blue closer to the G1 toy, with perhaps silver/chrome weapons and red fists. Stoked to hear we might get Crosscut next from this mold!

The comparison with the cybertron era mold goes to show how Hasbro is skimping out on us. Guess the Hub needs more money and attention.

Couldn't we have both size and poseability?

Weeeellll... while it's hard to deny that the Deluxes are shorter these days, Cybertron Hot Shot (and Override) was pretty tall, even for that time. If you compare Skids to some of the other Cybertron deluxes like Red Alert or Sideways, it's a little more in sync with the sizes.

Also remember that the price tag of deluxes has now been slightly reduced, from $14.99 to $12.99, in most places. So, while the shrinking and simplification is disappointing, your wallet is not being crunched as hard.

Looks good. Would love to see him and Waspinator make it this way before Christmas. Wonder who they will repaint him into. BTW, I figure the delu vehicles are a bit smaller lately so that they will interact better with Metroplex (and possibly other future bases.)

A bit that didn't really register before: the doors are really interesting, with the gull-wing format. Am I right in thinking they swivel to get to "wing" position in robot mode? Because that's a pretty neat design choice I haven't ever seen before (though I spent a long time not buying).

The fact that you can hide most of the guns gives a huge happy, as I'm a Classics collector and have no attachment to MTMTE

Looks good! It actually looks like he has more freedom of motion in the shoulders than I feared he would, so I'm satisfied with that. All those hollow holes in his limbs are a bit unsightly, but I understand why they're there, and I suspect they won't be as noticeable in person or sitting on a shelf. I do wish his hands were separate pieces (being molded in the same plastic chunk as his forearm looks a bit cheap, like a Legends figure), but that's a small nitpick. I'll probably leave the weapons mostly hidden, but it's cool we have the option either way. And his face sculpt is nice, unique, and surprisingly organic-looking (feels very comic-y, which is appropriate).

Really looking forward to getting him. I wonder if the inevitable Takara release will be a darker G1-esque blue.

EDIT: I also really like the vehicle mode. It has tons of personality, and will provide some great tuner-car variety among the other Autobot alt modes.
