For the second assortment of their IDW Comic pack-in Transformers Generations releases, Hasbro went with a pair of retooled / redecoed releases. One of the two was Hoist, a retooled Trailcutter featuring a new head and a crane in place of the truck bed cover / hatchback panel accessory Trailcutter sported. While a simple retool, it is very effective and also true to how the original Hoist was retooled from Generation 1 Trailbreaker. Hoist's deco is quite simply, gorgeous. The green and orange contrast as well now as they did in 1985, and the updated design is very much in keeping with the "Classics" style of reimagined Generation 1 Autobots, while still being distinctly Hoist. The new head in particular I feel is very well done, with nice yellow eyes and faceplate evoking Hoist's unique look. The crane accessory folds up to become a small blaster for Hoist - unusually conservatively small among Transformers toys who have huge blasters. It's a different style of design though, which makes it nice and refreshing. We've been waiting a long while for a new Hoist to add to our Classics shelves, and while the Revenge of the Fallen Hoist filled the space nicely in the interim, this toy is definitively the Classics Hoist in this fan's eyes. I enjoyed the Trailcutter toy a lot, but I would say Hoist, with his brighter and frankly more unique deco, is the more appealing of the two. If you can only get one, consider Hoist (if you can though, get both, they are both amazing toys and characters deserving of your time, and excellently designed little toys to boot). Really like the fact that you have to look closely at both Hoist and Trailcutter to tell that they are the same basic mold Hasbro did a good job with these guys
Love the Hoist goes Hollywood pic! I can't wait for the upgrade kit. The wings are iconic and every time I look at him I feel he's missing some yellow
I have a thing for mouth-plates, and their presence can improve a mold immensely. This is one of those occasions.
I'm just impressed how they have started doing things like release them at the same time instead of making us wait for the mold to get repainted and a new head.
Yeah, but that's not good enough for me. Big and bulky is what I wanted to see. Having a squat version of Trailbreaker that's head-and-shoulders smaller than Sunstreaker feels like a problem to me. Though it's all relative... we have plenty of deluxe versions of characters who should be much larger, so I guess it depends where you shelve them. I just don't think this Trailbreaker and Hoist will look good with the rest of their '84-'85 Autobot Classics brethren. zmog
He'd have made a nice "Tiny" Voyager - now Voyagers are a bit small pickup trucks and the like would work quite well (so long as they don't make them really lanky like DOTM Ironhide). I think I prefer the ROTF Hoist if only as he's got less hollow legs and a bit more bulk to him - and a more realistic vehicle mode too (So long as you unscrew the gun and swap it to the other hand to reduce his kibble issues). This new one is OK if used with the other '2013 Generations' but I think the smaller size hurts them for me to see them with the 2006 like "Classics" crowd. Perhaps Hoist and Trailbreaker will be perfected as Masterpieces someday. and the G-2013 one can be relegated to his own thing (IDW-verse). just as MP Prowl is overall a much nice choice than the classics one is (allowing for the size differences a bit).
Yeah, I totally agree. A half-finished Hoist custom from Prime Bulkhead is currently my standing "Classics Hoist". These guys could have easily been voyagers. Classics style Seekers as voyagers would also be welcome. zmog
