One question is if they were going to put extra effort in why not put the window inserts back in longhaul or the leg split in Mixmaster. ?

It's not a matter of putting them back in, as entirely retooling the figures / creating new pieces for such.

As the photo you linked to isn't a variation of the original tooling but a prototype that was heavily altered before being finalized on and then having the molds created from what we've been getting since 1984.

So for all intents in purposes, those parts never existed on the figures released.

You can always open it for display, then put it back in the box once you get Giant.
