I'm worried about him being incredibly hollow to allow for all that mass, but he looks BADASS!

Are we talking energon grimlock from the 2 pack? I'm pretty sure the consensus on that was it was terrible.

Actually, I'd say most of the comments in this thread are positive, but fans just love trashing other fans, and whining about how bad the "fandom" is... I guess you just can't win. The only thing we complain about more than Hasbro is ourselves. :rolleyes2

The head on the back is also a traditional Grimlock feature. But... your point about the wings highlights an issue I've been having with Transformers design in recent years.

While there has been some genuinely fantastic engineering and design work happening, it feels like there's a slightly backwards design philosophy going on. Since Bayformers, Animated, Prime and the video game characters started appearing as toys, we see Transformers that are no longer designed to function as toys, with credible transformations from robot to alt mode, but instead toy approximations of designs that appear onscreen, that rely on the magic of animation to flub the actual transformation dynamics.

This Grimlock is a good example of that issue at work. G1 Grimlock had wings. These were an elegant design feature that also had a practical function.. they allowed Grimlock to fold up in such a way as to leave no gaps in his dinosaur mode. Highmoon studios had no such issues to work around. They were able to pick and choose what features they wanted in the bot mode (in this case a wingless Grimlock) and still achieve a "perfect transformation" because animation allows them to cheat the mechanics. Now, when you strive for screen accuracy, you end up with this... an accurate bot mode, and an alt-mode that's kind of a mess. Kind of a shame.

Prime Dreadwing is another similar case... a fairly accurate bot mode, and a jet absolutely riddled with issues that might have been less severe if the robot form had been more informed by practical alt-mode considerations.

I still think this Grimlock looks like a pretty good toy, and I can accept the liberties taken, but part of me would kind of like to see a return to Transformers designed to work as toys FIRST, with screen versions derived from that foundation instead.

It was terrible... though if you wanted a rather simplistic "Muppet Babies" version of Grimlock, he did the job. When Energon was on the shelves, that Grimlock was the only viable G1-style version of the character available... and in that sense he sucked. He was hardly a definitive Grimlock.

But now, when we have other alternatives that are closer to what Grimlock "should be", he becomes more acceptable as a sort of novelty. He's pretty cute. However, it is clear that Hasbro really half-assed that figure. He doesn't even have molded fists, for chrissakes.

Sometimes having the design of a character to be based on toy logic can have it's animated counterpart end up looking dead, toylike and not looking very fluid or alive . The Unicron Trilogy is a good example of this. I just don't like how the Unicron Trilogy characters are designed because of how their face look so dummy like as well as being stiff not to mention thier bodies looking like wooden dolls. Also that just because doing a toy first before a animation model can end up having the figure look even less accurate to it's animated counterpart. Beast Machines is a good example of this.

An idea I have is instead of doing designs on toys or animation model first why not work on both types of design and transformation philosophy at the same time? Have both Animation and Toy designers work together at the same time doing designs while taking tips for each other on what will work as a toy and what will work as a character model in a series. That way we don't have to do one way or another which will lead into designs that work as a toy yet works very well as an animation model.

Not as "stylized" as I would like, but it's something I can easily live with.

Looks like a good figure and one that will expunge the Classics Grimlock from existence.

Notice he has way more paint apps. It's Comic Con, they painted it. The real one, of course, has crappy, ugly plastic and minimal paint apps. Just look at the swords.

The Takara one probably looks like the one shown at ComiCon.. Which means that one is an immediate buy as well.

My biggest concern is how fun the transformation will or won't be. Both robot and Dino mode I find aesthetically pleasing; I just hope I find the transition between the two equally as pleasing.

In robot mode Grimmy is making a duck face. Why did they have to ruin an otherwise must buy with a fucked up head?!
