MTV Geek – RUMOR: Disney Buying Hasbro?

I'll admit it makes sense from a merchandising perspective, but then what would Disney take on the creative (ie: movies, TV, comics) side be?

    Interesting either way...

Soon Disney will be the only company in the world. Everything like Movies, fast food restaurants, merchandise and other corporations will all be Disney's property.

So wait. Was MTV Geek reading my Twitter feed last Tuesday?

As I was totally speculating that Hasbro is now a VERY attractive property for Disney. They have lots of their own IP, manufacture a good deal of Disney's boys toys between Star Wars and Marvel (with long term contracts at that), and are somewhat vulnerable given their spending on getting the Hub up and running.

Not quite. What they don't own will belong to Comcast, Time Warner and Viacom.

Also: Hasbro *didn't* to the toys for PotC, Toy Story, or the new Wreck it Ralph figures. It makes sense for them to "cut out the middle man" as it were and own a toy making company.

Right. And Hasbro's attractive as they actually own some very profitable in-house brands that have been fairly well exploited, as well as some lesser brands that could easily BE exploited.

Plus, they have Marvel/Star Wars toy rights until 2020 or so if memory serves, so if they were to buy ANYONE it would be the guys you already have long-term deals with for major product lines.

The company that own Kraft(TM) is one of the biggest, it and 2 other companies own just about every food product in any store you find in any country in the world, and most of the generic food you find, like the smart choice wal*mart brand, came from them in one way or another..

Kraft is THE biggest food maker in the world.

Makes sense. Them having Marvel and Star Wars, and Hasbro making the toys, why not? Then they would gain TF, GI Joe, Ponies

Hasbro already has it's own TV station so why would they let Disney buy them if they' aren't trying to keep the Hub afloat?

    Hasbro Shares Outstanding = 130.62M * 36.12 per share = $4.7 billion outstanding equity.

    Hasbro's Current Valuation = ~$5.67 billion.

Hasbro's revenues were roughly $4.25 billion last year.

So to take control, Disney would have to acquire at least $2.25 billion in stock, if they did things the hard way.

    By comparison

    Disney Shares Outstanding = 1.79B * 50.18 per share = $89.82 billion outstanding equity

    Disney's Current Valuation = ~$99.97 billion

Revenues last year: $41.9 billion, about $5.52 billion net

    (figures from macroaxis)

Yeah, it could happen. Though I'd expect to hear more than "HE TELL ME" from an MTV blog before I put any weight to it.

Because A) They might not have a choice if Disney goes the "hostile takeover" approach, and B) Because that approach might not be needed if Disney offers them an obscene amount of money, options, abstract assets, etc.

Because running a TV station costs money. And it's what I'd argue makes Hasbro vulnerable to a takeover - instead of diverting resources into running their own station, they'd be able to get their stuff directly on to Disney channels.

Also, it would probably unfreeze RiD's broadcast rights, given Disney may still own those.

...Another thought, too - odds are that if Disney wanted to they could slaughter the third party toys market. All they'd have to do is threaten to withhold ALL Disney product - I suspect Hasbro couldn't do that right now with their licensed stuff, but if it was Disney doing the threatening.... well, losing Marvel, Star Wars AND Transformers would be a good chip to threaten with.

To be honest I hope this isn't true. I mean I know Hasbro's in a rut but I'm worried about what it can do to the Hub and it's line of shows. Like what if Disney decides to cancel some shows and keep certain ones in because they feel some of them are too scary or edgy? Hasbro made the Hub to keep that from happening to the shows it has because look what happened to TFA at CN.
