Isn't that what competitive multiplayer is for? I'm pretty sure Matt said Escalation is a mode to allow players to play as actual story characters out side the story.

Agreed. Escalation isn't about customization. Escalation is about survival based on established story characters in extreme battle circumstances.
I look forward to just how much customization has been upgraded in the various modes of multi-player. Not looking forward to the cheaters though...
