New look for IDW Transformers Comic App. Hi, Im not entirely sure where to post this but I just checked my updates for iPhone apps and the previous Transformers IDW app has been completely remade and is now a part of the Comixology series of apps. And I have to say its way better than it used to be. All my downloaded comics are now placed in their individual series rather than one giant list. Forgive me if I seem a worrywort, but I'm a fair bit concerned by this digital expansion. I don't have, and nor do I want, an app-capable tablet or smart phone, and I prefer to buy my comics in a format which allows me to actually hold the thing in my hands; for the same reason, I don't buy e-books either. All that said, I see this e-comic thing becoming more popular with the people I know who do have and use those app-capable devices, and this only provides them, in my opinion, with an excuse to not buy a physical copy of the comic. If the same were to happen with the people who have standing orders at the comic shop where I volunteer, our sales figures would plummet if not nose-dive over the space of a few weeks. If that happens then, naturally, business would be devastated. I know there's no stopping the relentless march of progress, but what about those of us who don't care to spend crazy money we don't have on a gadget that'll just be "upgraded" in 6 months' time anyway? And more-importantly, when people stop buying physical-copy paper comics, what's that gonna do for the comics industry in general? Short Answer: NOTHING GOOD.
No different than the movie business. Comic companies can actually make more money this way as the cost of distribution is way lower. So the digital format may actually be good for the continuation of content. Plus like having all your music with you at all times it's cool that I can have all my magazines and comics on my iPad It does suck that it puts people out of work in comic stores. But those people will need to adapt and change just as those who worked at blockbuster and other video chains did.
I was picking up the comics digitally because it was cheaper to do so, and because my nearest comic shop is over 10 miles away. Now that they've increased the price I don't think I'll bother. £2.49 for something I can read in under 5 minutes (and which, to be fair, isn't very good at the moment) simply isn't worth it. I'll grab #81 and maybe a few graphic novels, but I refuse to pay full price for account-locked content with no inherent value. That being said, the new interface is light-years ahead of the old one, so at least I can enjoy what I have in a more organised fashion
No offense to the dinosaur in the thread who is trying to save his comic book store, but digital distribution is the only way I will ever buy any of these products. No way am I going to wade into a poorly comic book store ever again. It's cool when you are a kid, but not when you are an adult looking to blow some time on the commute. Sorry that you decided to get into the horse buggy business.
