I can't really be bothered explaining the maths for the umpteenth time, so I'll just say this to complainers - you, outright, do not understand how expensive a dub would be to produce for a thirty-five episode boxset. There is a reason that discs of FIVE EPISODES of dubbed-for-DVD anime retail for $25. The cost of a brand new dub would have EASILY put this set into three figures. There is a REASON it didn't happen, and it wasn't "Oh fuck it, let's not bother, who gives a shit?"

I got this set at botcon and i have to say i like them so far. Ive watched the first 4 episodes and as they are funny to watch with the voice actors, but i really like them. So far worth the $23 i spent on them.

Instead of a box set, sell them as small batches for $19 like every other anime does.

Probably, but kids are gonna see this, coz I guarantee it'll be stocked in the kids show section at stores. Parents will buy it, and kids will be pissed.

HUGE difference between a kids' cartoon and traditional "adult" anime. 8yr old kids don't watch Cowboy Bebop, etc.

Don't need big names. A good dub MAKES big names. Look at all the voice actors in the Ranma 1/2 dub. Nobodies like Venus Terzo, Mike Donovan, Sarah Strange, etc. Seriously. These guys were NOBODIES when Viz snagged them in the early 90's.

No need to spend too much on voice actors, since the majority of the show would be new characters anyway.

No need for Cullen, Welker, etc. Don't even need Kaye... lots of young Canadians looking for voice work.

Actually, a lot of it IS "let's not bother"... They KNOW they can come out with the set, and the people will jump for it, then double-dip later with a dub.

No, it's not. Shout Factory, bluntly, cannot AFFORD the costs of a new dub. It's not just paying actors, you know - it's paying for studio time, engineers, equipment, sound editors, translators... the time involved in all of that, and in having to have Hasbro read multiple revisions of THIRTY-FIVE scripts in order to get them approved... and they've had enough trouble navigating Hasbro's recalcitrance to even do SUBS. It's been made very clear it's not viable and won't be happening. And the idea of individual disc releases for material of this age, highly dubious quality and very narrow audience is wildly infeasible.

    Head on!!

I have no problems with sub titles. I watch Naruto and Bleach all the time so I'm used to it.

Well, not doing it will hurt them too, since I know I'm not spending a penny on something my kids can't enjoy, and many others won't as well, when we can get fansubs just as good for free. And if people can make the fansub for free, I'm sure if Shout wanted to, they could make an official dub and charge $60 like everyone else does, for box sets, or two box sets for $35. I'd easily pay that, and I'm pinching pennies.

So it asks the question... if they are only gonna half-arse it, why even bother doing it? I mean c'mon... if they can go back and remaster frikkin' Sailor Moon cartoons, they can definitely make money on Transformers, which has a MUCH larger fanbase, which frankly isn't being serviced by this attempt at making a DVD release. This year, with a blockbuster movie, HUGE expansion of the toylines, and being bigger than ever in the heyday of the 80's, putting a little money behind a Transformers DVD seems like a no-brainer. I've done professional production, and trust me, it's not THAT hard, especially these days, with computer editing and mixing. There is ZERO excuse for Shout! other than they took the easy way out just to make quick money.

Really? Big Lots! makes a fortune doing that very thing! LOL So does every other discounter...

I for one don't want to read words at the bottom while trying to follow the
action on the rest of the screen. And how do you figure it would have cost
that much?, if they wanted to sell it to everyone then they would have found
a way to do so with a dub or not, an still keep the price at $30, look at all the
leg work that went in to the G1 US series fixing all the animation and the soundtrack,
and tracking down the original broadcast masters..and still the prices were around
$20 a piece for each season set.

And I'm telling you that if you think a box-set of brand-new dubs for thirty-five episodes would only cost $60, you're having a fuckin' laugh. DVD sets of only 12-13 episodes run $50 currently. Three digits, easy.

Yes, yes. You totally know better than the professional DVD company about the costs and viability of their own products, which they have repeatedly told us they had to fight with Hasbro get out in THIS format. It couldn't just be that they can't afford it. They must actively be trying to screw everybody over because they're lazy. There couldn't possibly be any logical reasons behind it.

I bought this at BotCon and it is plagued with spelling and grammatical errors, and I'm only 4 episodes in.

It feels like a Babelfish translation with Japanese names changed to the English names (ie: Convoy is Optimus Prime, Hot Rodimus/Rodimus Convoy is Rodimus Prime, Chromedome/Brainstorm/Weirdwolf/Mindwipe/Skullcruncher/Blurr/Kup/Spike/Carly/Wheelie/Daniel etc.). The font they used for the sub is really bad too ... I've seen better subs from fans than with this production.

Full review coming in the next ish of TFWe.

But... it's not out yet! This sounds a lot like the Metrodome UK set.

(Mind you, I've suspected for a while now that this set might just be re-using those subs, since it's SO inexpensive.)

Don't get me wrong - I'm enjoying the series and it's new translation (Aaron Archer and Rik Alvarez both stated at BotCon that these are BRAND NEW subtitles and a BRAND NEW translation and that they put a lot of work in to it).

However, errors like "acknoeldge" and leaving out words of sentences "Quick! We need hurry!" or having a subtitle (a small one sentence subtitle) stick on the screen in to another scene, causing a delay on the sub-titles for an entirety of another scene, really detract from enjoying this without cringing.

I appreciate what they've done, I just hope there's some more proof-reading done with Masterforce.

I have to agree that HM almost killed my love of G1. It's just plain sloppy and I loathe it's herky-jerky plots, like Wheelie and Daniel defeat Trypticon like Wile E Coyote? Galvatron getting taken out by the "super-friends" move from Gatchaman? Optimus dies 3 episodes in? Horrible.

The BEST moment of the series was Soundwave and Blaster fighting to the death, but the animation is even worse than G1.

HM should be watched only ONCE and only as a reference to Sixshot and Scorponok, since they are sort of fun characters. I'm just gonna wait around for Victory, it's just as cheesy, but easier to swallow.

The joy of being able to say "FIRST!" and then sharing all the cringe-worthy moments of the translation. Again, I'm glad they brought this out ... just sad they didn't catch all the errors before going to print with it.

I was looking forward to this...now not so sure.Should i just stick with my bootlegs? I'm not worried about the sub titles.I grew up watching anime in the 90s and subed was the ONLY way to watch it.Maybe i'm just better at muti-tasking.I can watch and read.

They should have dub it in english. I would have paid a little more but I guess some people are just to lazy to do the job right.

I've watched only the first episode so far and that's one more episode than I've been able to sit through before this set. The old dubs were just too bad, and I've never listened to the fan dubs. I prefer subtitles, even if they do have errors.
