I'd be voting for Dinobot in an instant. When I first started watching Beast Wars I was *not* a fan of the character, but once I got into it....HELLS YEAH!!!

And for the record, the Universe Dinobot shelf-warmed because of the bad paint scheme. Henkei one owns that mold.

LOL. Good thing I understand irony. ;)

I'm not doing a point-by-point rebuttal because you brought up a lot of good things that had slipped my mind, due to not primarily being a big Sunbow cartoon fan. Just want to issue a few clarifications.

    1) I never claimed that smart writing saved the franchise, to my recall. I'm just arguing that Beast Wars had a large effect on the franchise, Dinobot had a large effect on Beast Wars, and as we see in the popular vote and in this very thread, Dinobot means a great deal to a generation of fans whether anyone likes it or not.
    2) The claim that Beast Wars saved Transformers is primarily an economic claim, which has been made adequately in this thread already. I believe the only reason it was brought up is because of the attempt to dismiss BW's significance in the history of Transformers.
    3) I hereby disavow any mistaken impression I might have given of the characters in G1 not being fundamental to the brand. I do believe, however, that Beast Wars strengthened and formalized the common mythology of Transformers that is used in all lines today.
    4) I still have no idea why you are talking about theme. The literary concept of theme simply does not seem to bear any relation to what you are talking about, seeing as how you have used it in reference to the character of Bumblebee (and, presumably, the archetype he represents) and to the setting of Beast Wars.

Something one should consider - the organic beast deal was kind of a 90s marketing thing, a breath of fresh air that the brand needed to reinvent itself for that decade, which is probably why Hasbro has yet to reintroduce the concept beyond a few homage toys. That and the market has yet to be tired of vehicles. They'll go back to beasts or something should Transformers hit a brick wall again, though this is unlikely to occur any time soon, given Hasbro's seemingly-successful modern strategies.

Even though Beast Wars is apparently not marketable currently in Transformers, one should never discount it's importance to the mythos, the brand and the impact it made.

Maybe next time, friend. I'm pulling for Erector, Longtooth, or Prime #3 from Revenge of the Fallen myself.

It's not so much that Rattrap isn't a popular character, it's that given the extremely heavy slant on realistic vehicles that the franchise is in at this point, that there's just no place for a rat. Beasts are a rarity these days, and the few that do make it into a line are inevitably going to be more mainstream, "safe" choices, like dinosaurs, big cats and bugs. Hasbro also seems to think that being organic beasts is a very defining element of the Beast Wars characters, and is resistant in most cases to giving them vehicle forms or even robotic beast forms. This prevents them from using these characters in most modern lines. These characters were very successful and carried the franchise for 5 years by themselves, they just don't fit with Hasbro's current "play pattern". And they're unwilling to change them to fit it, as they think it will dilute their uniqueness, and that there's literally hundreds of other characters that they can use without needing to drastically change them first. Or are Micromaster and Actionmaster characters just more popular these days (they do get more homages than the beast era after all ;)  ).

    Exactly.

As much as I'd like Hasbro to reinvent the BW characters to work in modern lines, even giving them vehicle forms in some cases, Hasbro just seems resistant to the idea. Animated was a good attempt, but I don't think it's use of reinventing BW characters will catch on, sadly. :(

The nature of the Transformers brand at this point means that the BW characters will be limited to anniversary years, where they're trying to include toys from all eras. And even then it was a difficult fight to get them into the 25th anniversary...

Just the whole name thing is an issue for any kind of non-beast alt mode for the more prominent BW characters. Why would would rattrap be called that if he wasn't a rat? Or Cheetor or Rhinox?

To me, that is probably the biggest reason why these characters don't get rebooted into other continuities and not because people don't like the characters.

A lot of the names are problem, but not all of them. Rattrap is one that could be used for a small, rugged military ATV or a particularly dirty taxi. Even Cheetor could be a yellow race car with graphics and logos that have a cheetah theme. Animated did a good job of reimagining Waspinator as an evil mold mate to Bumblebee.

Others like Airazor, Quickstrike, Depthcharge, and Rampage could also be given vehicle forms. However, those names seem to have fallen into the "random name reuse" category for Hasbro, so I guess those particular characters aren't considered worth preserving. :peoples:

Most Beast Wars characters are limited by their name though.

It's not like Bumblebee had all that much in common with the insect of the same name, but it still stuck.

Exactly. Bumblebee gets reused a lot for characters that have no animal mode whatsoever.

Hasbro can choose to reuse whichever Transformer name they have in their catalog, so long as the name clears trademark requirements (see: Shockwave) and doesn't have any potential controversy attached (see: Slag and Bombshell). They have their own internal logic why certain Beast Wars names have never been reused outside of the franchise, but I do like the fact that they haven't done so. It doesn't make the names any less unique, for instance.

I watched the G2 cartoons, the old movie, Beast Wars, a bit of Beast Machines... and then basically forgot about Transformers until the new movie came out, and Willis started talking about them more in his comics. I think it's pretty safe to say I'm not a die-hard fan. I'm certainly no serious collector.

    I'm voting for Dinobot.

Because if you induct everyone now, who would be left to induct next year? Or the year after that... and the year after that... and the year after that....
