Agreed, the creative forces behind the comics (artist/writers) were fantastic. What Pat Lee and his cronies reportedly perpetrated on the company and to the contracted artist, if true, were pretty heinous.

all i gotta say is sunstorm vs omega supreme

thats what seals the deal for DW over IDW

issue #4 ( i think it was? ) every page you turned made you go holey shit....
i cant think of a IDW book that had that splash and action quality on such a scale

stormbringer sorta had it a little...but not like that

i love Don`s work....and i was so waiting to see what those promos were of optimus holding Alita-1 were all about.... i was utterly dissapointed when they went under

i read the IDW books....mostly cause i want something transformers to read.....but i dont enjoy anything that IDW makes compared to DW....just dosnt hold a candle to it

pat lee was a ****** and got cocky......but at least he had an eye for something long lasting in our minds that actually moved and did something ....where IDW has taken there sweet time of years to actually get something moving....their books are slow...the arcs are drawn out to a rushing end....that dead universe thing ? the sideswipe spot light couldve been three books to cover an ending like that.....but nope...rushed it

Don make it better for us please if you can

IDW never said there weren't G1. The whole point of this series is to reboot the original G1 series. As to going a different rout than DW in re-telling the G1 story then yes there G1 and not GEE-WON.

Oh and when you find a retcon be sure to bring it up and I'll fill you in. Andy said that the Chronology book had errors and wasn't retconing anything.

LOL! Dude what did you write LOL!

Just think to our existence in the universe, being religious or not humans exist for the simple fact of "just because".

Why do all the Transformers have to be males?

Females Transformers can exist for the simple fact of sharing emotions with the males and Primus wanted them to be more in touch with them self and not so logical. I feel there doesn't need to be a "why do we need them or why are they here". Then it makes it kind'a sexists saying females only exist to bare us men's seed.

And with the Beast Wars characters there still the same Cybertronian as the G1 so being male or female is no different. Having an Organic Alt. Mode doesn't change that matter.

As for a Beast Machine Cybertronian, that may be possible - ew!

    I'm with you on that.

But the whole Dead Universe thing was rushed due to a bad editor wanting to change gears ASAP and not waiting to do so naturally. It seems AHM is where IDW kicked the can for most people. I wish they would at least consider making character mini series a little longer than 4 issues, take your time and tell a good story :]

How typical. I have seen lot of fans like you.

You take art over story. They could release a comic with pretty pictures drawn by Don of Transformers fighting without a plot and you'd continue buying it, I guess. [/sarcasm] I guess it was the same kind of people who liked ROTF.

Me, I liked Spotlight: Sixshot better then that silly Sunstorm saga, even re-read it more times, and that spotlight has (admittedly) some very shitty artwork by an ex-Pat Lee protegee.

Story over art, anytime. If art is good, then that's an unexpected bonus, IMHO. If I would want to look at pretty Transformers drawings? I would go look up "Transformers" on Deviantart, or buy a TF Art Book.

I'm sorry, I fail to see the logic in that argument. You can say "we just exist", but most people, religious or not, are not happy with this answer. And certainly we will more easily find an answer to the reason for existence for some fictional characters/species, then to our own? ;)  JUst because it's fiction, doesn't mean you cannot find logic in it.
Gender, wherever found in the universe is only used for reproduction. Asexual creatures, like most one-cell organisms and even some primitive worms, do not have genders.

What you say about the roles of female-like robots by Primus is a neat theory, but we have seen no proof of this anywhere in official material. In most TF shows, comics or cartoons, 'females' fulfill the same roles as the 'males', it very well could be that they only appear female to us organic species. One explanation for their looks and female voices could be that they have taken this aspect off from organic species they have encountered - the Quintesson origin certainly would explain this, as they built the femmebots to be maids/etc to be sold as consumer goods. But the Primus origin, or even Animated's universe doesn't offer any good explanation. Heck, not even the Ultimate Guide goes into this. So it's unlikely we can solve it right here in this thread, no? ;)

Yes, it does change. Remember all those BW episodes where the 'beast' part took over, or where Tigatron taught the others to get in touch with their organic halves? They have become techno-organic, they transformed into animals - it's only logical that gender came with this. I do not think that back on Cybertron this was so - it certainly wasn't so in G1, of which BW/BM is a direct continuation of, and it would certainly explain why BM Megatron was so adamant to eradicate the organic element - he saw it as an infection that changed the way the TFs acted and existed.

It's because folks like him that bad stories get sold and new ones are made - as long as they have good art to get them sold.

What I said was not personal against him specifically. I encounter this type of attitude everyday - not just with comics, but with movies, serials, etc. Sorry, but as I get older I am not content to sit and quietly complain to myself, I share my thoughts. That's what a message board is for. And his post was... so typical. When anyone says anything good about the DW universe, it's always the Sunstorm saga, which was simply a no-brainer plot made famous because of the awesome art of Don. Stormbringer had Don AND a great plot. Other comics had great plots but mediocre art... and they get ignored or get bad reviews. Just think what could have been if IDW's 'ation' series would have been drawn by Don. I bet Ryall and co. wouldn't have dumped Simon's direction the way they did...

geez there's alot heat in this thread. I myself prefer the DW comics (minus the horrible art, can't stand the marshmellow proportions) but I like IDW too (atleast until AHM, I lost interest after that). Why do we have to get in such heated discussions about why one TF fiction isn't as good as another in our opinions?

For the person that said there were no retcons in DW -

    WRONG!

How about Blitzwing being on the Ark II when it exploded in v1, and then v2 retconning the fact that Blitzwing was on Cybertron until v2?

Same goes for Red Alert - even more noticeable than Blitzwing as he actually had lines in v1!!

Oh, and what about Wheeljack dying at the end of v1 (I don't care if they don't spell out HE IS DEAD; look at the pictures; read the words "things will never be the same again" - they intended him to be dead) only to turn up again at v2 as happy as Larry.

Trust me, DW had retcons too.

I still think some of the most damning - and accurate reviews - of Dreamwave's run (esp. Vol 1) can be found at TFArchive - Transformers comics, cartoons, toys and everything else! - Transformers News & Site Updates. Seriously go and read them - they'll make you laugh, and they're also rather accurate!

Dreamwave wasn't bad. I liked their Armada books.

But let's face it, Marvel UK rules over all TF comics past, present and future...

First thing, Marvel UK sucked, and the thing with Wheeljack was explained in v2 of DW when jazz is talking to wheeljack. I miss DM, it was so much better than the stuff that IDW is putting out.

alot of anger in this thread

I like all the comic series so far for different reasons, with no exceptions coming to mind

but DW did have a fair few retcons, like:

Trypticon appearing before he was built in War Within
Triplechangers in War Within before the process was developed
    Characters dying and coming back

Your trying too hard to compare Transformers to humans when there not. As for my theory. Well I would rather have that than the Tranny-Arcee no matter how cool she is LOL! But there were plenty of Autobot who had girlfriends in G1 and even had crushes on humans.

When you look at technology there is no real need for male/female. But when technology is in the form of life, that subject will naturally come up. For an organic the only use for 2 genders is reproduction. But when you don't reproduce and have a 2 gender species, the question is not "why do you have a female if you don't reproduce?" it should be "what is the female's function in a species who does not reproduce?". Taking on the fiction from that angle would've made for an easer way to explain Arcee in IDW.

That or saying her protoform was turned female would've sound better seeing all humans are female before "Pops" plants his seed in a woman LOL!

In that case they would only be able to reproduce another animal (in theory) unlike in Beast Machines. There 50/50 half robot and half beast "techno-organic", scanners copied and pasted monkey parts onto Optimus Primal's robot body, it didn't necessary "turn" him into a gorilla. So if Primal wanted to be a perv and have sex with a lady gorilla they would reproduce another gorilla based on the DNA that was copied for his beast mode (in theory). It is unknown if CNA and DNA are compatible to reproduce a hybrid.

And then theres TransMetal tech, when a good chance that mess got burned off. Also something else to think of, DNA scanners could have copied the necessary parts needed to shield and disguise them on Earth. Ruling out the need of the reproductive system in their Beast Modes.

With Beast Machines the term used is TECHORGANIC, one word meaning both technology and organic are one. "If" those parts are still around, then yes they can reproduce. But then theres the factor of interspecies relations, BA with Silverbolt. Chances are that a new universal system would have came to existence to allow this. I doubt the All Spark would force segregation onto its people.

Don used to be my favorite TF artist. Now I look forward to the day when he goes back to drawing them like he used to. If he never does, well then... Casey Coller's the new man in my estimation.

As for DW vs. IDW... I think they've both got their ups and downs, but I loved the Dreamwave comics and I love the IDW comics. I do think that Dreamwave's "house style" led to a more consistent portrayal, and if Don did his best work while being part of said style, I'm okay with it.

Wow... I think I prefer Don's stuff in black and white WAY more than I do when it's coloured. It's so crisp and clean and spacious... none of those dodgy digital gimmicks or faux animation-cel colouring. Very nice.

I totally don't remember what the hell was happening near the end of DW's run. I don't even know if I got as far as #9 or #10. The distribution was starting to get spotty.

I agree that the stylistic approach to IDW's TF art is getting a bit chaotic, and I think the fragmented approach to knitting the story arcs together is getting kind of problematic. But I think that on a case-by-case basis, IDW's artists and writers are (mostly) doing a great job.

The thing you keep forgetting in all this is that if the species does not reproduce sexually... THOSE AREN'T FEMALES. Without sexual reproduction, there is no male or female. "Female" is no more an absolute than "Male" is a default setting.

So in conclusion... regardless of whether there are dainty, curvy TFs that superficially resemble a cliche of 20th century Earth humans, and regardless of whether standard blocky TFs seem to enjoy the company of these curvy bots... there are NOT two TF sexes.

This is the scientific point of view on the matter. Fembots are just Transformers who look different.

So yeah, just in case you're wondering... YES... that means Springer is GAY! :lol

You also are basing your ideal of what a human female is on to a species that is not human. But if there is no different in sex in Transformers as you say. What's the point of referring to Arcee as a "she", what the point of the term Fembots?

    Agreed!

Ok, getting this thread on topic and not trying to argue sex in TF comics...

Here's a link that will help explain what was going to happen on these pages. Unreleased Dreamwave issues - Transformers Wiki

And as for IDW, I read Infiltration, the first six spotlights and Stormbringer. Then I gave up. Probably just bitter about DW. But, I've come to truly enjoy IDW. If you're on the fence about IDW start picking up the series in trade. I found the collected editions FAR better than the individual issues. They've really done a great job of webbing together a fantastic story. And as of right now, the new G1 series is amazing. I'm buying that one month to month! (...for now! :D )
