The difference between Transformers and those other properties is... no... There is no difference.
Not from the perspective of being Hasbros property at least. I mean, Disney created a lucrative movie franchise of a theme park attraction and Tim Burton's Mars Attacks whas based on bubblegum stickers.
Anything goes as inspiration as long as it works in the end.
