The money for a new tooling is either there or it isn't.
No repaints to pad out case assortments would also means stores getting piles of the exact same toy for months on end, leading to shelf warming, leading to stores no ordering new stock.
Besides, there's a huge number of children who have never owned these old molds before, not to mention collector type fans who never bought the original releases of these molds or who only recently returned to Transformers because of the movie. Quote:

The closest TF toy to both his robot mode as it appears in IDW's comics and the vehicle mode is Movie Wreckage, since his Stryker vehicle mode is (basically) a modified version the Mowag Pirahna family of LAVs. http://www.tfwiki.net, the Transformers Wiki - Serious intellectual discussion about transforming space robots.

The closest TF toy to both his robot mode as it appears in IDW's comics and the vehicle mode is Movie Wreckage, since his Stryker vehicle mode is (basically) a modified version the Mowag Pirahna family of LAVs. | Onslaught definitely doesn't look like G1 Hardhead, but I think the vehicle mode of IDW Hardhead bears a decent resemblance to Onslaught. They're both six-wheeled armored personnel-carrier-type vehicle with turrets on top (albeit one with a single cannon and one with dual cannons).
Another mold I think could work for Hardhead (despite being an older mold) is BM Tankor. With it's quad-treads and giant, off-center cannon I think it's good match. Even the robot mode (aside from the gorilla arms and claws, at least) bears a superficial resemblance: Hardhead has an octagonal hatch on his chest, and Tankor has a hexagonal port of some sort. An extensive remold of head, hands, and turret could produce a fairly decent Hardhead. I actually bought a Tankor a while back intending to do a bash of this (I was planning to rip the crane cockpit off Cybertron Mudflap and turn it into his turret)... but I ended up not following through with it because a) I am simply too lazy and b) I ended up liking Tankor a lot just on his own.
Man, I think that's enough brain cells devoted to Hardhead for a while.... |

More for me, I guess. I think he's quite the dashing fellow. | I think it's mostly just a broken expectation. Many assumed it would be the white Lioconvoy-style deco seen on the Legends Leobreaker repaint, and when it wasn't, it was viewed almost like a broken promise, even though there was no promise to start. I admit to being a little curious why they didn't go the "Kimba the white lion" route, and came up with a couple guesses:
* The mold layout of the Voyager Leobreaker toy might not easily support the Lioconvoy color scheme, not without blowing out the paint app budget anyway.
* Marketing probably figured an obvious Optimus Prime color scheme would sell better than white, gold, and red, especially with the kids and parents who've never heard of Beast Wars 2nd. How the Animated toy line REALLY came to an end |

Leo Prime...I have a LioConvoy from Japan(white/gold). The Japanese paint job is FAR superior to the one they're using here. I understand they want a g1 type color-scheme, but good lord...the head deco and hind legs look ridiculous!
And as far as Overload goes...WTF???!!! ANOTHER Scattershot re-paint? Good-freakin'-God! Hell, even using Defense Red Alert woulda made a whole lot more sense and we wouldn't be looking a repeat re-paint.
I have collected EVERY u.s. main-line tf since Beast Wars, and I'm SERIOUSLY considering skipping both of these. That's just sad. ..
G.A.P. | Yeh WTH?! with Overload that's just blasphemy! And i say Meh! to Leo Prime i'm not really into Prime being an animal or beast of any kind |
