What I want to know is, is he molded in a grey/light blue then painted metallic, or is it the normal tan toy with a light metallic coat like the Best Buy Ratchet? Kinda hard to tell from that pic.

Best Buy Ratchet was actually cast in metallic yellow, then painted over with metallic yellow, wasn't he? Because they can't paint every centimetre of a toy (joints would foul up) they try to cast the plastic in the closest matching colour in areas they don't paint.

So likely, if this toy is painted all over, then they cast him in simillar colours so the unpainted parts don't stick out like a sore thumb.

I don't see how they make more money. Are that many kids really buying three or four of the same $20 toy?

no, but there are that many different kids that buy at least one, if not two of these. plus collectors on top of those. Its the same EVERY line, and will ALWAYS be this way. the more times you use one mold, the lower your overhead is, which means the higher your profit margin is.

I passed on this figure since the jet mold looks so ridiculous - it's basically just a box with the upper half of a jet stuck on top of it - but this new metallic repaint has definitely caught my attention. I know the jet mode won't look any better, but since I only plan to display it in bot mode anyway, I might as well take advantage of getting the only movie accurate colored version they'll probably release of ol' Screamer.

The same goes for the upcoming metallic repaint of Leader Megatron. In bot mode in proper silver & copper colors, it probably won't look too bad. Then again, ANY recolor would beat the current cotton candy colored version.

and a jazz in proper silver too, not that blue-ish swirly grey that hasbrahs tried to pass of on us.

We have no word on such a repaint for Leader Megs. And two spots of pink on an almost completely grey and black toy does not make the entire toy "cotton candy colored."

Wow this mold must be popular. Fortunately I am not a big fan :p  Would have been nice to have red and blue Starscreams together, though.

But collectors are irrelevant. Isn't that what we're always told?

True, but I'm pretty confident it will happen since that mold has yet to get any repaint tweaks and it's very obvious that people want an accurately colored version of it. Could be wrong, but I guess time will tell.

If the toy was actually "almost completely grey and black", then I'd agree. But it isn't. It's predominantly blue & pink just with some splashes of black & grey. So yeah, imo, it is indeed cotton candy colored and nothing close to how Meg's looked in the movie.

I see two tiny spots of pink on it, and a few splashes of blue over a mostly grey and black bot. I'll give you the blue, as I have seen samples of it where the blue dominates, but pink? Predominant? It's a stupid color addition, sure, but it's so non-present that removing two small, unimpontant pieces from the toy completely removes the pink from it. How's that a predominant color?

Nope, my BB Ratchet is avocado green with the metallic yellow painted over. It's pretty jarring in some parts where painted meets unpainted, especially the thighs. I wish I could take some pics to post, but then again, it's barely noticeable in photos. The paint job is kinda sloppy in many places, but I'm still really happy with the toy.

This figure will be a tempting compliment to my metallic Ratchet....
