Reminds me a lot of the old Marvel TF comics whenever someone transformed. There was sort of this standard "Robot crouching/jumping - jumble of parts and motion lines - vehicle" thing they often did, especially if the artist didn't know how the toy worked.

How the Animated toy line REALLY came to an end
