The point I'm making, is that we're dealing with a different medium. I feel the same way as you, I'd love to see a closer G1 Ironhide than what we got here, but if it's all cubes, I know you recognize that there's no way IH could move with any realism as CGI. I'm with you in sentiment, but I'm gonnna wait until I see the movie until I truly hate it. And trust me, if it sucks, I'm with you 100%. But, if IH has to move realistically, the image heading this thread is more appropriate than what we watched 20 years ago.

Also I agree with you re. Megatron. But. The sketch we have seen is all we got. And remember, he's allegedly ( SPOILER PEOPLES! ), been dismantled by humans for 50+ years by this point. If they get Frank Welker, I'll be a convert.

However, thinking of Prime, BB, and Jazz looking sufficiently like their G1 counterparts gives me enough hope for the moment, to even forigve Starscream ... there we will absolutely agree. However, in context, I think they got enough right than they got wrong. Which is pretty good, right?

Have you ever seen Gundam? The visual style of Gundams are much like a more high-tech Optimus Prime if you look at them. Check out anything from Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, or even Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. Those are big, blocky robots that are much more realistic than the G1 Transformers cartoon designs -- but they still look a HECK of a lot more like the original Transformers than these movie designs do.

If it's an issue of articulation and movement, I have no problem with the designers making alterations to the joints and some of the proportions of the robot limbs and such. Of course these need to be realistic. That doesn't mean, however, that the entire design asthetic of the original characters needs to be thrown out. Without the head, Prime is unrecognizable. Bumblebee, except for being yellow, is unrecognizable. Why do the heads have beaks, or just blank faces? Why do Brawl and Barricade have 4 eyes each? These are, of course, design decisions, but they have nothing to do with the articulation of the characters and making them move realistically.

There're a lot of Michael Bay and Don Murphy quotes being thrown around regarding realism, etc, but I don't see any real substance behind them. Computer graphics have evolved to such a level that it is MORE than possible to bring the Transformer, as we know them, to life on the big screen. Changes have been made to these characters because someone decided that the classic Transformers aren't cool enough. Frankly, if someone who thinks that way is working on a Transformers film, I think something is seriously wrong.

Mazinger Z was updated as Mazinkaiser and it worked perfectly. Getter Robo has been updated multiple times and has still retained the core image of the original design. The same goes for Gundam, Giant Robo, and countless other robot properties including the modernized T-X from Terminator 3. What has happened with the Transformers movie is practically a crime. It's like opening a box of Corn Flakes and having Raisin Bran inside. Someone might argue that "Well hey, this is better and it's much healthier for you!" but at the end of the day, if the box says "Corn Flakes," it should contain Corn Flakes.

And if that doesn't make sense to anyone, I apologize. I give up now. My fingers are frozen and I can't type anymore. Forgive any typos...

OK man, first of all, I forgive your typos :)

Second of all, I haven't really got into Gundam, for the reason that I have a hard time finding their designs ( as much as I like them ), practical. That is what differentiates TF from Gundam for me; practicality. And, I want to like Gundam, but its universe makes no sense to me.

I would put something else to you, note that these is NO Gundam live-action movie that we know of. So your comparisons to Gundam are not truly valid, as they do not compete in this sense. And why not? A matter of taste, we're getting our TF movie before our Gundam movie. Perhaps TF also is a more relevant franchise than Gundam. ( senses flames )

I'm also a child of G1, and I totally resonate with the things you say, but you should try to recognize that going from cartoon to film requires changes - yes not perhaps as many changes as we are seeing ( like Starscream .. ), but at least Optimus looks liks Optimus.

From an opposite viewpoint, don't you agree Ironhide could look a hell of a lot worse? If Prime was truly unrecognizable, this movie would be a lost cause, so you have to agree that they're trying?

It's NOT just you. The toy looks great. This looks like more of the same "mecha monster" garbage that has been propped up as "realistic alien" transformers all along. Maybe I'll just buy the toys, and skip the movie entirely? :)

After that horrid Frenzy and average Starscream. Now this THIS is wicked :rock

Ironhide was always kind of a badass quick to fight and what not. And now he can back it up

Sounds like you've only been exposed to stuff like G-Gundam and Gundam Wing... you need to watch more Gundam. :)

One has to remember that gundam has been on the air for 25 years now, and has several different incarnations and "realities". The ORIGINAL Gundam stuff, as well as most of series set in the "Universal Century" and "One Year War" setting... that stuff is actually pretty close to true "hard sci-fi". It's very realistic, and the universe is VERY carefully developed... much moreso than most Hollywood summer sci-fi blockbusters would ever hope to be.

There are a few concessions to style, notably the use of bipedal humanoid combat units... but what's interesting is how throughout the series this choice is re-examined, explained or debunked within the context of the Gundam universe itself. It's smart stuff.

My favourite example is an aristocratic pilot being shown his new prototype space fighter... which has no legs. "It's unfinished." he says.

The mechanic sighs... "You officers never get it... legs are just for show anyway..."

As for the movie-transformers... I think a lot of their design is much more based on superfluous "style" than a lot of the defenders of this aesthetic would care to admit. ;)

I just don't see how these are transform without some morphing or at the very least, some things disappearing into nothingness.

I highly recommend the Universal Century timeline when it comes to Gundam. Check out anything from the following:

    -08th MS Team
    -0080: War in the Pocket
-0083: Stardust Memory (my personal favorite)
    -Zeta Gundam
-and much much more!!! (couldn't resist)

I also agree with Smog on the notion of style over substance. I think in another 10 year time, people will look back on this Transformers movie and shake their head a bit. There's a reason why people remember the old cartoons like Transformers. I don't think these movie designs will resonate with the audience the same way. Ok, time for bed...

EDIT: Oh wait, I forgot I was going to say something else about character redesigns. If anyone reads Marvel Comics, they know all about how Luke Cage has been revamped over the past few years. He used to be a guy in a crazy yellow shirt with a metal headband and an afro. Now he's some guy in a T-shirt. The same arguments people are using to defend the new movie designs apply to the new Luke Cage -- "He's more realistic, more modern, and more stylish. The original design was cheesy and couldn't work nowadays." I think the designers just took the wrong route. Ten years from now, people aren't going to look back and say "Hey, that's Luke Cage!" They're going to say "Who's that black guy?" I hope someone understands what I'm getting at. It's time to throw the towel in. Thanks for the discussion, guys.

I would really appreciate some links to what you're talking about, as I've seen Gundam Seed, and other stuff ( generically speaking :)  ), so please do give some lnks you think I haven't considered, although I imagine the points you talk so highly of are footnotes .. I agree with you on the TF 'style' however, but stand by the point that some things *had* to change to get from G1 cartoon to 2007 live-action. As I have said, since Prime looks like Prime ( as far as we can tell, lol ) we should be pretty happy all things considered.

The point still stands though - we've got a TF movie before a Gundam movie. ( I know you won't like that point! )

I like it, for the most part. Looks very tough.

Much better looking than the toys so far.

    Hate the head design.
